Well duh. You never had a testimony- why wouldn't you feel liberated? Good for you.Originally posted by SoonerCoug View PostI just want to take this opportunity to bear my testimony about how nice life has been since I quit participating in the Church. I highly recommend it to anyone who has ever considered living free of totalitarianism, homophobia, sexism, and religion-sponsored injustice.
There are a few things that I miss about the Church. I value the service aspect of Mormonism and some of the music, but I believe that I have found even better ways to provide service and much better organizations for my donations.
I encourage all of you to live a life based in reality rather than archaic fantasy, unless you are a BYU employee, in which case I would recommend that you just pretend.

I disagree. And honestly, all joking aside, I say this with nothing but sadness and rage. Who are the only ones who really feel bad about this? The targets of this purge are the progressive Mormons. The June 3 were not really apostates; progressive Mormons strongly identified with them. Progressive Mormons are being told, choose ye this day whom ye will serve.... It's getting harder to sit on the fence. I predict this will not be a very long or robust thread, and progressive Mormon involvement will be pretty much nil. From now on, either you live in fear of the knock on the door, or you cross the River Styx. I say this with nothing but empathy and rage on behalf of my progressive Mormon friends who have been thrown to the curb by the LDS Church.Originally posted by Pheidippides View PostIf you want my opinion (and I know all of you do!), this is about demographics and statistics. The Church believes that the disaffected crowd is small (I agree, although, I think it's larger than they think) and that it's largely irredeemable. Probably true. They are also concerned about the non-disaffected "sinning" crowd - all the women I've seen in Utah county wearing gym clothes all day because they couldn't bother to change back into Authorized Pattern, or all the families showing up at Costco on Sunday. So they are going to prune the wild olive branch and nourish (read: chasten) the natural. I don't doubt that they expect mass resignations from this (several are being planned as we speak), and I think their general attitude is "good riddance".When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

It seems she's currently in Utah while waiting to go to Africa? I have no idea why she's going to Africa, but chances are he records are still in Virginia. Seems as though they are wanting to take care of business before she leaves the country.Originally posted by All-American View PostWhat's this about the former bishop initiating the proceedings? Her husband will be attending grad school in Kenya. She's in Utah visiting family before the big overseas move. Her records are still in D.C., although her bishop knew the entire time that she was leaving the country. The timing is deliberate.Originally posted by Moliere View PostIt seems she's currently in Utah while waiting to go to Africa? Wondering what those in support of this action have to say about the following:
Joseph Smith: "I did not like the old man being called up for erring in doctrine. It looks too much like the Methodist, and not like the Latter-day Saints. Methodists have creeds which a man must believe or be asked out of their church. I want the liberty of thinking and believing as I please. It feels so good not to be trammeled. It does not prove that a man is not a good man because he errs in doctrine." (History of the Church 5:340)"It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

Are they "teaching" this? Or are like minded people coming together in the internet age? Also, what exactly about petitioning for ordination of women is false doctrine? Where is the scriptural or historical basis for excluding women? From prohibiting women from giving or participating in blessings for instance?Originally posted by All-American View PostSomething to do with ordaining women to the priesthood, I think. Those who have followed more closely can confirm.

According to the ordainwomen.org website:

That's a hoary response to this sort of thing. Maybe we should ask some if the people JS exed for teaching false doctrine what they thought about it. Iow, while there may be reasons to agree or disagree with the substance of the dispute or the church's action here, I don't think this quotation advances either side of either issue.Originally posted by FMCoug View PostWondering what those in support of this action have to say about the following:PLesa excuse the tpyos.

If she's just visiting for a couple weeks then there's no reason to transfer the records. The timing is still horrible, but I do wonder if there's any reason to transfer the records.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostIt seems that more than just the timing is deliberate...

FWIW, email is an unacceptable form of communicating a notice of disciplinary action. Your only options are having two Melchizedek Priesthood holders deliver the message or sending it by registered mail with a return receipt."Discipleship is not a spectator sport.
