The results were surprising, and confirmed a building school of research which indicates that the effects of pornography on individuals vary based on moral and religious beliefs, and that seeing oneself as addicted to porn is far more damaging than actually using pornography.
Maybe this is why the Brethren have moved away from talking about porn with every waking breath.

    Also, from the article:

New research from Brigham Young University
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I'm glad they've changed their tune, but the damage has already been done, and those talks focusing on the evils of porn will still be in official church publication for years, or decades.

Probably the same kind of damage mentioned in the blog post.

that says it is damaging. it doesn't specify the kind of damage. but i'll get to my point. whatever damage has been done, don't you think a change of tune will prevent further damage?

No, not so long as the old talks are still in publication and still taught as the word of god through his leaders in sunday school lessons. It will certainly lessen the impact on newer generations, but those that were taught this years ago don't suddenly have their lives unaffected by it. Its a good change, but de-emphasizing the rhetoric doesn't go far enough to prevent further damage.

The blog post was a good, but hard read. I'm glad you and others weren't affected by these things.

I take issue with their take home message:
Take home message: If you are religious, you probably shouldn’t watch porn.
This is incomplete, while individuals that are religious should indeed try to avoid things that are they are taught is harmful is just plain common sense. Don't religions also have a responsibility here as well, to stop teaching things that cause needless harm?

Can someone keep a running tab of all the things the string pullers of the world want the Mormon Church to apologize for?

Religion's have a responsibility to teach people what the religion believes is right. I have been far more involved in the Mormon Church than you during the years of anti-porn teaching. I agree that there was a tendency towards the obsessive on the issue, but I think that most of those who suffered so much damage was likely more caused by their individual personality challenges than the Mormon Church.

I guess that explains a lot.

                            • I suspect that feeling guilty about fornication is probably a lot harder on the fornicater than the actual act of fornication itself. I am not sure that this sheds too much light on either the moral code that condemns it or the person who does it.

caveat: I didnt read the article.
                              PLesa excuse the tpyos.

                              • I read the article and felt like it was well done and reasonable. You can't sum the article up in one sentence. I'd contest that porn is evil and not just from a religious standpoint. I think the government had a reasonable role in limiting and regulating porn, mainly because it can have adverse affects on people, especially young developing minds, and it also results in the objectification of women.

I'm also glad there is research out there that shows that religions are doing more harm than good by claiming every male is addicted to porn. I'm glad the church is taking a step back and now a church sponsored school is basically calling out past church teachings as harmful. Good stuff all around.
