You mean as opposed to football or those spectacularly overrated television shows? Notice I always talk about the LDS church in a larger historical or social progress context. You could replace "LDS Church" with Islam, Catholic Church, Evangelicals, the NFL, the Academy, many other influential institutions. Mostly religions, yes. But notice that when Chris Hitchins decided he wanted to focus his energies and anlysitical gifts on the single biggest civil liberties threat in the world he chose religion. The LDS Church happens to be the reference about which on a day to day basis I can speak with crediblity. But actually I don't care if LDS women get the priesthood because unlike women in Saudi Arabia they can just leave. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

If crediblity means full of it, you are spot on.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostYou mean as opposed to football or those spectacularly overrated television shows? Yes, that's exactly what I mean. Sports, tv shows, movies, music, going out to eat, etc. You know, stuff worth wasting your time on. Or you can just give me a call to go get a drink sometime. I might even pay if you order something cheap!Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostYou mean as opposed to football or those spectacularly overrated television shows? You folks just need to learn how to appreciate SU's posts. Much like sushi, it is an acquired taste."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

SU's posts almost seem good and interesting.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostAgreed. People read them through the wrong lens.
When your little brother or good buddy are off base you tease them. You are trying to show them they are off base, but you love them underneath. I really get the sense this guy hasn't come to that point with the church. I think he hates it enough that it takes the fun out of any trolling of back and forth.
I am calling him unto repentance. To become a better apostate. An apostate comfortable with his past and his people. An apostate who will laugh at being called an apostate and being called to repentance. An apostate who realizes that everything involved with the church isn't a diabolical scheme to control people and suck all the fun out of life.
Life is tough. If he does not believe the church is true, so be it. I've been there myself, so I can't judge him negatively for that. But he needs to come to terms that even the general authorities he seems to universally hate may be wrong about religion, but well intentioned. People trying to do good need be cut a lot of slack, weather you agree with them, or not.
I think if he does some soul searching with honest examination about the church he will get some peace. And more importantly (to me) his posts will be a lot more fun. His lense is so skewed away from my reality that it's not even fun to read right now.
Come unto the true and everlasting apostate path SU. Find peace. And better, more interesting posts.

Yeah, that was the point. It was all to silence him. His argument (intentionally left as a singular) is too powerful.Originally posted by YOhio View PostStop picking on us, SU! Stop it!
Thanks for turning an actual attempt at discussion into a quickly dismissed straw man. That is truly unique and helpful on an internet message board!
I just want him to stretch out a bit. His attacking style leads me to believe he can handle a little critique now and again. He is clearly a highly intelligent guy who I think could help me see the world in a different way. Starting from overly simplistic generalizations about Mormons makes a boring thread.
If I was to genuinely try to say a message to SU it would be, Keep doing what you do SU. I like a good gad fly. If you insist on trolling with simple caricatures, it will be more preaching to the choir. Be more real and it can cause a lot of good introspection and discussion.Last edited by Vic Vega; 03-07-2014, 06:39 PM.

I can see where SU is coming from, keeping a foot on each side of the line. He's a good honest person, and has just enough faith to keep some skin in the game. He's exploring a new and uncharted territory where hundreds of years from now our descendants will have followed his circular path to the New Jerusalem. He'll get there eventually, and we will welcome him into the presence of the Lord. That's why Groundhog Day is such a great movie.

Always cracks me up when the new guys come in and start telling SU how to post."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
