That's right. We talked with them after it happened. It sounds like he is in good spirits all things considered.

        • And to add to the weird Kevin Bacon-ish web of connections going on here, my relative is in the Stake Presidency of the stake where the elder was shot.

It kind of boggles non-members' minds how church members have such an extensive social web, but put 20 random church members in a room and you're guaranteed to find a connection.

We have relatively large families, we have tight-knit social cohesion in our wards (compared to other types of groups and even other religions in general), and we send people out all over the world making social connections, so it's no surprise that church members are world champions at building extensive and personal social networks.

Church group leaving thank you notes and he comes after driver pulls her hair, makes multiple f bombs and threats, does not realize it was family friend. Said he had plenty of drunk Indians come by. Did t realize it was family friend. In urban Blackfoot I don’t think ward boundaries are that big so knows everyone. Overreacting or was he scared shitless? No good deed goes unpunished. I'm thinking he had to be drunk.

He says he had one drink and that he was completely clear in his thinking - seems like maybe he had more than that.

An 8 ounce glass of bourbon is still one drink!

summary: Matt Gong (Elder Gong's gay son) has a nice lunch with his dad to introduce his fiance. Everything going well until Elder Gong asks not to share the pic on social media. Matt hands it over to John Dehlin.

                          Ugh...

I don't understand why Elder Gong was worried about the photo. I think he was wrong to tell his son that.

That being said, why would his son make that post and attack his own father publicly like that? That is ugly. Yes your parents should have compassion and empathy, but maybe show a little compassion and empathy the other way.

John Dehlin jumping in to leverage the family dysfunction is classic Dehlin. I can't stand that guy.

Despite being 100% in agreement with Matt Gong's position, it does seem a little off-putting airing the family's dirty laundry. Elder Gong did ask for it though. There would have been nothing but upside for him to appear in a pic with his son and partner. I'm sure if you polled the younger members what Gong or others should do in a similar situation, the percentages would be the exact opposite of what leaders still apparently think is OK behavior for families. Kind of depressing that one of the younger apostles still feels the pressure from legacy leaders a la Oaks.

The fact that Matt gave this to John Dehlin makes me wonder if Elder Gong suspected his son might try to politicize the selfie anyway. What son would do that to his father? Their relationship must really have been strained to begin with.

I feel for all parties involved here.
