I read “origins of power” about ten or so years ago. I checked it out of the downtown library. At the time it was eye opening to me but it was more of a scholarly work than something like the CES Letter, which is obviously written with an agenda in mind. Quinn was a true scholar and a great one at that. Some say that his later works had too much personal agenda in them but I can’t opine as I didn’t read much past his early scholarship (never read extensions of power or his same sex dynamics books).

I’ve also read a lot of other stuff that most would deem faith shaking, but I limit my consumption to truly scholarly works, which I think helps. The book I read on the temple (not by Quinn) was fascinating but could easily be turned into a CES Letteresque book, but I liked reading the actual original sources rather than some exmo interpretation of them.

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

      • Why was Quinn ex'd, by the way? He certainly was considered an 'anti-mormon' and apostate by the LDS leadership. A quick Google search reveals that he didn't publish his same-sex relations among mormons until a few years after his excommunication.
"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

Nobody knows the real reason. The church doesn't publish proceedings of disciplinary councils (can't remember the new name for them) and Quinn never divulged his side of the story. Anything you hear at this point is speculation, the most famous speculation being from Lavina Fielding Anderson.

          From wikipedia
Quinn was summoned to a disciplinary council to answer charges of "conduct unbecoming a member of the Church and apostasy," including "'very sensitive and highly confidential' matters that were not related to Michael's historical writings." Anderson has suggested that the "allusion to Michael's sexual orientation, which Michael had not yet made public, was unmistakable."

Yes I know. My main point was sort of rhetorical. Apostasy was officially stated as one of the reasons. I am unaware of any of his publicly available research, up until the time of his excommunication, that has not been proven true. And most of it is now accepted and published by the church.

If he was exe'd because of his homosexuality, then I get it (though I certainly disagree with it). But apostasy for Quinn is ludicrous. He was a believer.

            • Anyone know the story regarding Hank Smith and Moliere's old friend Calvin Burke?

Yeah. Last week Hank made some really dumb post on twitter asking why people who leave the church still cling to some of the teachings of Joseph Smith. He said something like "pick a side already" and he got some well-deserved blowback - I mean why in the hell would you care if someone kept some beliefs? How on earth is that a bad thing?

Anyway, Calvin replied with "On behalf of my fellow mormons, I apologize to all the ex-mos for Hank Smith" or something like that. Hank then called Calvin "Korihor" in a reply. He quickly deleted the tweet and apologized, but the damage was done.

I like Hank Smith so this was painful to watch. An unbelievable lapse in judgement. One thing you NEVER - EVER should do, is publicly go after students. Calling one the anti-christ is beyond the pale. Especially a prominent gay student like Calvin. Calvin posts some dumb things occasionally, but he is a good kid with a big heart. And he was absolutely on the right side of this one.

                • I googled "hank smith byu" and the first entry for his employee bio came back with a "that page doesn't exist" error page. He is still listed on the Religious Ed directory, however.

I am guessing that is just a broken link. It happens.

I don't know who any of these people are. I'm going to count that as a good thing. It is nice to just have a clean break and live my life without being obsessed with the latest blowup in the Mo/Ex-Mo/Prog-Mo world.

Hank Smith is the new John Bytheway (except without the prepositional last name).

I am against there being a new John Bytheway. One is too many.

I participated in that thread. I posted something innocuous. I said "Can someone believe that Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God, but that Polygamy was not from God but from Man?" And DesNat was quick to come back and tell me no. That whole thread got sideways fast.

Well other than a clean break, I can say ditto to all.

Our son likes Hank Smith, so we've acquired a few of his talks on CD. He also went to an event featuring Bytheway, Smith, and a paraplegic lady whose name I forget.
