        • This was before I posted on message board and before I owned a cell phone, so I have no written proof of this. But had I been a regular CB poster back when Elizabeth Smart went missing, I almost certainly would have shared my theory at the time that she had been abducted by her father's gay lover who was feeling scorned that Ed wouldn't leave his wife. And that Ed was having to pretend to not know where she was because he didn't want his wife to learn his secret.

Turned out she was just abducted by a psychotic religious zealot with a god complex, but I feel like this is a good time to point out that my theory wasn't as ridiculous as everyone seemed to think when I shared it with them. In fact, I'm going to go ahead and give myself a 19-years ex-post-facto SUwish.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

The SLTrib also posted the now deleted Facebook post. I also think this was a poor choice as well.
I know some members that have taken big issue with gay men leaving their wives. I can understand some of the anger, but these men entered into a marriage sometimes at the urging of church leaders, and if not at the urging of church leaders, surely from undue pressure, either explicitly or implicitly, to be in a heterosexual marriage. Some have been happy and stayed throughout the marriage. Others have been unhappy and with public acceptance of homosexuality they now find it tenable to leave the marriage. I can only imagine this wasn't easy for anyone in the Smart home, but I bet both Ed and Lois will recover and be happier. I find it great that he stayed until his kids were grown and it seems they can all handle this. I mean, if they can handle what Elizabeth went through, they can handle anything.

This is very sound advice. Anonymity brings out the worst in people. Twitter comments should generally be avoided as well.

This. I feel sorry for Ed Smart. Poor guy has had a rough life.

It is an incredibly complex situation each time these happen. I realize that I'm going to get called a bitter Apostate for this, but the only place that anger should be directed in these circumstances is at the church.
I disagree as I'd add in society in general. Remember, the Democrats didn't openly support LGBTQ until 10 years ago, and a shorter timeframe for Obama, the Clintons and others in the party. Mixed orientation marriages that happened decades ago aren't just due to the Church or a church, it's due to societies pressures and standards. The church isn't clean at all in any of this, but it's not the only one to blame.
