        • No way on earth her attorney would have signed off on that ("sure, trespass on the property of the people we're suing and accost a potential witness! The judge will get a kick out of the jaunty prologue!"). She's clearly hurting, so not hard to give her a pass for it, but you have to wonder if the guy exploiting her for internet points convinced her to override her attorney, steered her away from consulting with her attorney, etc. Sad stuff.

How would you have written it assuming that you were in charge?

not blamed a likely rape victim for acting “for her own personal cause” (!!!!!!!!!!!!) (nobody cut devin durrants mic) and not “find[ing] other means to communicate [her] message” rather than disrupting a worship service (she tried, and was functionally ignored).

                • Those guys should not try to grab her and move her off the stand IMO.

Better to just cut her mic and move on to a hymn or send everybody out to other meetings, no?

That’s exactly what she and her dumb accomplice are trying to provoke is some type of “assault.” I would never put my hands on a person in that situation — that is not smart.

I feel sorry for those leaders. That is a very difficult and awkward position to be in. Glad I never had to deal with anything like that.

agreed. not their fault and not a good decision by her to do this. she does not appear to be in a mentally stable place in her life, and anybody egging this bullshit on is a bonehead (but duh)

Except she's in the midst of litigation. That's the appropriate means of seeking justice and/or restitution. And it's why it's so problematic for her cheerleader to have encouraged this. It's a bad look to tell a judge presiding over your case that you had to do this because it was the only way of getting justice. It's the judge's ongoing job to help ensure justice in this case is done.

                        • yeah, i don't necessarily disagree with cardiac, but that's a ridiculously difficult situation for those guys. the possibility of something similar to that would be one of the things that would keep me up at night for 5 years if ever some SP were to get confused between the whisperings of satan and those of the holy ghost.

Cardiac's suggestion is a good one and there should be a basic training on what to do in these situations. As long as they are not threatening, cut the mic and ask them to sit down. If they refuse, go to a rest hymn with the organ extra loud.

Is it really that simple? What about someone making allegations that could reasonably constitute libel? For example, what is someone gets up and starts making criminal allegations against someone in the audience? What if someone gets up and starts dropping f-bombs? Churches are private organizations. It is perfectly reasonable for local leaders to have the right to remove people under certain circumstances.

It is absolutely not simple. And I am not finding fault with what the leaders did in this case. But I would hate to see a leader get tied up personally in a frivolous lawsuit because he put his hands on someone in a situation like this. We already ask a ridiculous amount of our local leaders. I don't think we can ask them to play the role of bouncer as well. Hopefully these situations will remain rare.
