"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

This was also pre-Heber J. Grant and the 21st Amendment. Before then the alcohol proscription was a word of wisdom, not a commandment. If you recall correctly, it became a commandment because Heber had an alcoholic uncle, Jedediah Grant, and he was pissed that Utah voted in favor of the repeal of prohibition. Before that, LDS drank and were merry, they just didn't believe in full out drunkedness, unless you wanted to be disrobed a la biblical, post-diluvian Noah.

On another note, my Chemistry Professor Eliot Butler at BYU admitted to being the bartender in the Army, because he noted they trusted a Mormon Chemist not to drink the stock.

I'm not sure what is less interesting or should be less of a story these days. Everything John Dehlin does or stories about the LDS church being shitty to the LGBTQ community.

I didn't realize Ruthie was part of the LGBTQ community. Thanks for the clarification.

On more than one occasion, it was my assignment to buy, mix, and dispense the alcoholic grog bowl at Army functions.

It was funny the first 5000 times it was used. There was one person who actually registered a Church for that worship. I believe it happened in Germany.

Has anyone brought this story up yet about the family that left their son stranded at Bryce Canyon because he told his parents that he wouldn't be reporting to the MTC? It's pretty heart warming.

Kaydin Abdul Karim Alabbas was at a difficult place in his life. He was supposed to report to the MTC the next day, but he had no desire to serve a mission and had just announced to his family he had no intention to serve. In addition, he was stranded all by himself in the middle of nowhere, not…
