Oh, I dont know, really. It's hard to complain about my lot in life. I feel sorry for myself when I am responding to some crappy set of written discovery or some such. But I very much enjoy meeting new people, learning new things and being in court. Plus, compared to the manual labor my grandparents endured, I am living a very easy existence. That said, the profession has changed a lot since I entered it. It is a very different animal now than it was 30 years ago. When my oldest was in college I did not encourage him to consider law school, although he did for a while. Eventually he went another direction and he has been happy and is well-paid so there are many alternatives that do not require a law degree. It is a career that can be very fulfilling, and it can be financially rewarding, but it can also be soul draining. The key, I think, as in most things, is balance. So if you and fallawful love being lawyers, that's great. I am glad for you. If someone hates it and then leaves law school to pursue some other career, I say good for them. Better to figure that out early rather than late (and especially better than figuring it out too late). As in most things, I am in the middle of those two positions, just sort of muddling along.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostReally? What I really wanted to do was make furniture. Cabinetry work. I have some great tools, and a beautiful table saw, and they sit out in my little shed/workshop untouched. I figure they will be a good lead for the eventual estate sale.PLesa excuse the tpyos.

I agree with your points. As for me, I wanted to be a physician but then impending marriage made me take what I thought was a more practical route. This route is better than any physical labor, and allows for a lot of flexibility in client selection and service. It is stressful, some of it self-induced and some of it client- or circumstance-induced. I enjoy my interaction with a large variety of clients and only dislike a small subset. When a happy client leaves the office, it is very fulfilling. I have discouraged my younger son, encouraging him to pursue loftier matters such finance and working within the securities industries and hedge funds. We'll see what he does.Originally posted by creekster View PostOh, I dont know, really. It's hard to complain about my lot in life. I actually enjoy my job, especially right now.
Prospecting for clients I didn't find fun at all. Working 70 hour weeks wasn't very fun. I don't do either now. 20-32 hour weeks and I don't want new clients, unless they have a certain amount of investible funds.
Now as they say, my clients are well trained. I don't like the stress of a market correction. Fortunately I don't see another '07-first quarter '09 coming again in my liefetime.
No trading, just managed money. Right now, thanks to someone my clients are up $20 mil.
It's great. A job that allows me spend time on here and be educated by long time friends. What more could a guy ask for?
