Quarles wrote an outstanding and very clever rebuke of the Church Membership Department approx. 40 years ago when he was a young membership clerk in a Manhattan Ward. He expressed dismay that the weekly pouch from SLC always contained mountains of membership records for people who had moved into neighboring ward, not his, requiring him to miss out on the many things Manhattan had to offer so that he could spend his nights redirecting the records. He acknowledged that he was but one lowly clerk "in a whole religion of clerks," but begged SLC to stop harassing him. I have a copy of the letter that, were it possible, I'd love to post here. It's very funny.

No conflicts at all. Originally, if you worked in the gaming business, you could not be a [Mormon church] member in good standing, couldn't get a [temple] recommend, but that changed on or about that time. Now you can do whatever you want — just don't gamble, and I don't gamble. I was very strict with my five children on this point. I had very few rules: no carnival rides, no motorcycles and no gambling.

So if his kids were to have spent an evening pursuing just loud music, hard liquor, and fast women, he would have had no complaints.

          • I'm not a fan of Harry. The thing that bothers me is not so much his positions, which I generally disagree with, but that I don't believe his political conduct has always been honorable and he justifies the dishonorable portion of his conduct using ends-justify-the-means rationalization. Humans have an amazing capacity for compartmentalization and self-justification.

            • I loved his "I'm right. They're wrong" answer to whether there was any conflict between his religion and the work he did in Senate leadership.

I loved that response too, but to be clear it wasn't in response to the question of whether there was any conflict between his religion and his politics. I think it was a broader response, basically meant to say that his Democratic policy positions have always been right (regardless of context).

Have you always been a Democrat?

My mom and dad had not much of a home, but I can remember so clearly my mom had a royal blue pillowcase with gold fringe. On it was written, "We can. We will. We must. Franklin Delano Roosevelt."

My parents were Depression children. They believed in Roosevelt so I was always a Democrat. I have said many times the reason I'm a Democrat is because I'm a Mormon. Those who have criticized me over the years because of my political positions are wrong and I'm right.

Haha, that's pretty cool. I've got a few people I'm gonna send that to I think they'd love it.

                            • God bless the Senior Missionaries.

I was in Lesbos a year ago, helping Syrian refugees. At Moria, the biggest camp on the island, thousands of refugees were being processed every day. The crisis had been ongoing for more than six months. I’d heard that every big N.G.O. had taken a turn at leading the camp, but each one failed because of mismanagement, backstabbing, interagency bickering, governmental interference, what have you. But, as horrid as the situation was in the camp, I thought that it was being well managed, as well as it could be with so many people in and out. I met this unassuming man, a retired Mormon from Utah, who had been volunteering at the camp since the first boats arrived. He spoke no Arabic or Farsi, had no medical training of any kind, none of the identifiable skills, yet both volunteers and refugees sought him out with every conceivable question about what to do. It seems that he had arrived to offer whatever help he could. He slowly began to fill in wherever he was needed. As the N.G.O.s began to wash their hands off the camp, he was needed more and more. When I was there, he was running the damn place.

We are this. We can be better.
