  • I should add, yes, indeed, massive federal bureaucracies have extremely obnoxious and dysfunctional elements. But the rule of law is the thing, as we see the alternative doesn't work in various parts of the globe. So, these are about the most unsympathetic protestors imaginable. They aren't protesting any killings.

If you believe that there is a place in our federalist system for federal regulation, I can't think of a more apt area than interstate management and of vacant lands and grazing rights. Also, in terms of property interests, who holds title to these lands? The federal government? I guess it could just say no grazing allowed.

What a stupid story about stupid, uninteresting people.

I told you, that part is not news and not that interesting.

The press has tried to be fair about their grievances but even most other ranchers disagree with them. Their grievance is banal and stupid. This story does not deserve a hundredth of this attention, is my point. It's a dumb story that is simply feeding on itself. I don't find Mormon rednecks at all interesting. There aren't even any deviant sexual acts being reported. I guess I can see why they embarrass you, but that's not interesting either. Mormons have fanatical elements and roots. That's not news.
OK, just as I thought. You haven't been following the story.

FYI, the Bundy family had a similar standoff in Nevada a year or two ago. There was a physical confrontation followed by hundreds of armed militia coming to the ranch and setting up snipers, vowing to fight and die, etc. In spite of owing millions in unpaid grazing fees and in spite of repeated refusals to remove his cattle, the feds backed down and left and nothing at all happened to Bundy. Except that he and his fellow anarchists celebrated victory.

Given that history, I don't think it is inevitable at all that these folks will be held accountable as you suggest. I would love to see it, but I am not holding my breath.

Yet you saw it as an opportunity to take a pot shot, an uninteresting and not unique pot shot, but a pot shot none the less.

          • Interesting article by McKay Coppins on the mormon angle to the standoff:

Don't bother reading it, SU. No references to kinky sex.

This doesn't make the story interesting. It only highlights how unimportant these people are. The feds don't sue or prosecute every time they could; only when it matters. they certainly haven't not done it because the Bundys are so popular. But the statute of limitations hasn't run. The son is just potentially making things more difficult for the father. They're deadbeats who don't want to pay their bills. Yawn.

You should stay away from all forms of media for a while. This story is everywhere!

And we thought the Mormon moment had passed with Romney's defeat. I guess not.

What on earth is your point? You begin saying that it is not interesting to you. You then point out that your bastion of media prowess, the NYT, has posted several front page stories which, you assert, they do only to get views. IOW, while you are not interested, a lot of people are, including a lot of people who read the NYT. You then proceed to show just how uninterested you are by posting repeatedly in this thread, discussing the stand off and speculating about its conclusion, making it very hard for anyone to believe your initial point. Well done. I guess.
                      PLesa excuse the tpyos.

My point was clear: They are a creation of the press. It's the only reason they are any more significant in the overall scheme of things than a beetle. They aren't even interesting criminals or cultists. If they weren't in the press they wouldn't exist. It's not about me, though. It's about how the press is handling this. I'm sure that somewhere in the media biz there are generic matrices, guidelines for stories that tend to generate eyeballs, and one of them is crazy religious fanatics who get into an armed standoff with federal agents. The masses are asses, but even as far as crazy religious fanatics who get into an armed standoff with federal agents are concerned, these are banal.

You should write a letter to the NYT and threaten to cancel your subscription.
