"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
The most offensive part of this whole blog post is they slipped a BYUI guy in there
Oh good hell... how did they let one of those liberal extremist hippies into Rexberg?

Our Church Leaders tell us to support people who hold values that are consistent with what we believe.
President Trump is the exact opposite of everything we believe.
He has no ethical boundaries, He lies without compunction, He is a serial adulterer, He has no religious convictions, He abuses and bullies those around him, He is a racist, He uses hate speech to stir up more hate against others, especially, Muslims, Latinos, African Americans and ANYONE who doesn’t agree with him.
I guess he didn't notice the 2016 election results in Utah: 45.9% for Drumpf and only 27.8% for the most qualified presidential candidate ever.
Wait a minute... Frank, is that you? Are you Ed Dart?

Not really news, but I found this list interesting. Seems to be a combination of lgbt supporters and trump haters. Submitted as proof that BYU is slowly going apostate. Funny to find out that a friend of mine from childhood is now a professor at BYU, which I didn’t know before.
That is funny. Is newsweek that hungry for clicks? This entire thing should have been ignored.

I think they should have just posted an article with the headline:
"Blog Posts About BYU Professors you Should Avoid."
Then just have the article be a screenshot of his article.
I.e., kick the lazy-journalism thing to an entirely new level. Gotcha.

Years ago I did Child Protective Services and took intake calls for when abuse or neglect was suspected. I got a call from a Bishop once who said that he had information that a Dad had been abusive to his kids. He wanted to know the process of what happens during a CPS investigation, so I explained the steps to him. He also wanted to know possible outcomes to the case - as far as consequences to the dad as a result of the investigation. We discussed things quite at length, but ultimately he told me that he wanted to work with the family himself first and wasn't prepared to report anything at that time. Nothing I said could get him to change his mind - not even telling him that if it was one of the children who told him about the abuse and not the father there was no such thing as clergy privilege and he was required to report it. Further - that the LDS church had made official statements that there was no expectation of clergy privilege, and the official LDS position was to get the abuser to call and report themselves, or do it for them.
The only interactions I've had with the hotline, they ALWAYS would tell the bishop to report things. Usually they would say that if the perpetrator self reported to the bishop it was best to get them to self-report to authorities. If it was the victim, then support them in reporting it or report it for them if necessary. But I've never heard them say not to report it. Kirton-McKonkie always got involved to give the Bishop legal advise - as is indicated in the article. But usually it was more related to steps to take, how to support the victim, what NOT to do by getting overly involved, etc.
I like to think that the official church position is still to report it to the proper LEGAL authorities - whether that's child protective services or the police. And that there are simply some rogue and/or naive Bishops out there who take the mantle and all the blessings it entails too seriously.
I think I've told the story before of going out to visit a couple who was struggling with their relationship with our Bishop when he was just newly called. He had only been Bishop about 3 weeks and I was one of his counselors. When we left, he asked me what I thought. I told him if they didn't get counseling they weren't going to last. His response was "So you think I should schedule an appointment for them to both come in and meet with me?" I said "No. They need professional help."
I don't know why Bishops feel like the mantle of the calling suddenly qualifies them to provide professional help - as if they'll be guided by inspiration to suddenly have the knowledge and skill that comes with years of schooling and practice. I mean - if Brother Jones needs his appendix removed or if Sister Johnson needs a new transmission in her car the Bishop isn't relying on inspiration to teach him how to do either of those things.
(I say this with all due respect to President Nelson and his story of receiving inspiration to know how to do a heart surgery procedure - but he had the benefit of being a heart surgeon at the time and at least had SOME understanding of how those things work.)
So if I’m reading it right, it is highly unethical to have a church lawyer advise a church leader about abuse allegations that could lead to financial penalties against his client.
Why is Kirton Mckonkie even involved in these calls? Doesn’t this scream a conflict of interest?

Partly to ensure that things get reported and properly handled. Many bishops screw up these cases badly which leads to serious complications not just for the church, but for the bishop who often ends up being in legal trouble when things aren't done properly. The bishop is 100% a representative of the church. How could talking to the church's legal department be a conflict of interest?
