Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

It what is obviously not shocking, I'll disagree with you a bit here. I think this is an oversimplification akin to "people leave the church because they just want to sin or were offended." While most of these public cases are ridiculous, the BYU-I being even more so, I know several people who have left and have tried to be silent about it but their a Mormon family and friends just won't stop bugging them. They finally take their issues to the public forum in an effort to get people to back off. I know that's the minority, but it happens.

For better or worse, Mormonism is engrained in almost every aspect of some families lives, and having a child go in a different path causes some families to panic and make irrational decisions. Flystripper must have a pretty cool family, just like PAC.

So the reason your ex-mo friends are obnoxious on social media is because of the bad behavior of their TBM friends and family?

Good heavens, you are going to kill it doing podcasts.

It makes my mom sad, and she says stuff from time to time, but over the years she has come to accept it and our relationship has not suffered. We are a pretty small family by Mormon standards though, so that probably helps with me being able to do my thing without having to feel like I have to constantly justify my actions and beliefs.

They tend to respond in kind, especially when some of the biting comments from family and friends are specifically directed at them. They shouldn't respond in kind, but they are human, so they do what pretty much every human does when pushed far enough. Some of the things that I've heard from people I thought were normal, rational members of the church that were directed at disaffected family have been incredibly hurtful. Everything from comparing them to Satan to them being the cause of their grandkids being damned to hell.

Like I said, it's not the majority but I've seen it in MJs family and in families in my stake.

Now, I look forward to your irrationally over generalized retort.

Sure, but like you said that's a small minority of cases. Maybe it's as simple as the old theory (endorsed by the BOM!) that chill members make chill apostates and zealot members make zealot apostates. Of course I don't know that this can account for Byron Marchant.

                        • Isnt it possible that all these descriptions are correct, depending on the specific example? I have seen families of apostates lash out in surprisingly negative ways that have led the apostates to react in an equally negative manner. That said, there are plenty of examples within my experience of people leaving the church that just cant walk away. I dont get it at all and it might just be the need for validation, as Lebowski suggests. But even if all of these descriptions are correct, it sure seems like there is a cadre of people who react to ANYTHING the church does (or doesnt do) in the most negative and public way possible. I guess they need more coaching.

The narrative of the mormon church appeals to people who have a need to be right. So I tend to think that demographic is disproportionately represented. I don't know if a higher percentage of that group apostatizes but my guess is they are very vocal when they do. They might leave mormonism but the pathological need to be right does not seem to leave them.

The cool part is the guilt free ability of calling those types assholes after they leave and are unable to leave it alone. That is a pretty cool thing, IMO.
