Is that the Mormon Stories podcast or is there another one?Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Link? This sounds very interesting.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post
And by the way, there is also a two-hour podcast. It is outstanding. One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

Actually a four-part podcast. Parts 1&2 are the best.
Interviewer is Andrew Ainsworth, not John Dehlin. I think Dehlin talks too much sometimes and gets in the way of the interviewees."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Yeah, that is a good one. When I listened to that a couple years ago, it was like a book I couldn't put down. I think I went on a couple of lunch-hour drives just to be able to keep listening. I was hoping there was something else out there.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThis is what I was thinking of:

I keep picturing the discussion in the COB leading up to this press release.
I am imagining Oaks, Bednar, and Holland sitting around a table trying to pen the release, signing Michael Otterson's name at the bottom... And then re-reading it. Suddenly Oaks chimes in, saying: "This would sound so much better with a woman's name at the bottom. Find me a woman to sign this--pronto!"
The prophet and apostles are cowards. They know that their actions are wrong. There is no hiding behind old age or ignorance. Otherwise they'd have had the regular guy sign it.Last edited by SoonerCoug; 03-18-2014, 03:28 PM.That which may be asserted without evidence may be dismissed without evidence. -C. Hitchens

There is nothing in either the Bible or BOM indicating that priesthood (in the manner we interpret that term) is required to either administer spiritual gifts or govern the church.
As others have pointed out, women routinely performed healing rituals in the church until around the latter part of the 19th century when they were told to knock it off. JS repeatedly told the RS that they would get (or already had) the priesthood.
The linkage of priesthood with leadership authority did not occur (in a major way) until the church started cracking down on rogue polygamists in the early twentieth century and then it was extended to its current state during the correlation era.
Let's see… the priesthood is not required (or was not required) to performpriesthood blessings"healing rituals in the church". And the priesthood is not required (or was not required) to be a prophet or prophetess (given women are not given the priesthood). Remind me why the OW folks want the "official" (or church approved) priesthood again."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

Yeah, to me, it seems pretty obvious that priesthood ordination is a symbolic gesture/principle of organization more than one of true power (if you believe that God answers the faithful prayers of people, male or female), but the symbolic gesture has real effects on the psyche of members, particularly children. The real question then is not why do the OW folks want it, but why does the church leadership refuse to grant it?Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostLet's see… the priesthood is not required (or was not required) to performpriesthood blessings"healing rituals in the church". Some of the other podcasts make fun of him for his six part series or whatever. I do think he could do with a good editor.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThis is what I was thinking of:

Yep. Paul & Peter didn't really get along (Galatians 2). Maybe they patched things up when they both showed up in Rome, but traditionally they did not have a positive relationship. (you know this, ER, but thanks for the shoutout)Originally posted by ERCougar View PostSolon can correct me on this, but modern Christianity was basically laid out by Paul, a man with no prophetic keys, and against the behest of the man with the keys.
Many of the prophets from the OT lacked what LDS call "priesthood keys."
Prophecy & Priestly duties (sacrifices & rituals) were not inherently connected, but they are in LDS hierarchy.
This is why it's problematic for LDS when they try to reconcile prophetesses from the OT & NT with holding priesthood.
I always seem to smirk when LDS cite Amos 3.7 as proof of continuing prophecy through the church hierarchy.
Amos was an outsider who railed against the (priesthood) leaders of the church and their love of building fancy shopping malls.
PS - Isaiah gets busy with his wife, "the prophetess" in Isaiah 8.3.
