I'm hearing that the fire might have been caused by copper thieves. A critical ground wire was stolen and that may have resulted in a short that started the fire.

The new fire, if it is one, is at least 20 miles away.

Thanks for your prayers and good thoughts. Go firefighters!
Bummer is right! Yea, go firefighters!!

This is crazy. I hope they catch these thieves and glad to hear that you should be out of danger.

When I was growing up there was a copper thief that was getting the cooper out of the large irrigation pumps on many of the farm in the area. Not only did the farmers have a huge bill to repair/replace their pumps many lost their crops from not being able to water. The farmers lost a lot of money while the thief was selling the cooper for scrap by the pound. So they put together an unofficial posse and caught the thief red-handed. They had a noose in a tree and were ready to string the guy up but the sheriff arrived just in time to talk them out of it. The thief was in pretty bad shape. When asked what happened they all said that he had tripped over a big rock when he was running away and that exactly what the sheriff stated in the report as well. It was pretty obvious that he had done more that just tripped over a rock.

Awesome! Thats some real justice there.
( FYI I most likely wrote that incoherently and will be properly corrected forthwith. Thanks)

No, that is a vigilante lynching and flies in the face of the Constitution. I guarantee that you'd want no part of that lynching if push came to shove and someone asked you to string him up.

Fire in Cottonwood Heights causing evacuations. Also, another new fire, Mallard Flats Fire, that is by the wood hollow fire.

Yes, fortunately the sheriff was able talk some sense into everyone involved.

From what I recall the cooper thief was able to get a change of venue but to another farming community and the "jury of his peers" found him guilty and, because the great amount of property damaged his caused, he was given some maximum sentence (which I don't recall). So in the end justice was served.

They just evacuated Fairview, which is about 6 miles south of me. I hear it's threatened by 2 fires, one on each side of town. I sent the family back into Utah County. We now have big fires north, west, south and possibly east of us. Although west of us is looking good for the time being.

The fire on the north flared up and it has crossed into Utah County. I've heard rumours of a fatality, but for all I know, it's just a stupid rumour.

It's burning on both sides of 89 now and moving fast. And you are an asshole Rev Robin Falwell.

I think it is official church policy that the ward is a geographical boundary and include all members and non-members within the boundaries. That's why the Stake Mission was abolished and they gave the missionary responsibilities to the Bishop. Because he is responsible for the spiritual welfare of all within the geographical boundaries, not just members.

Of course maybe that belongs in the Mormon Myths thread .. I'm sure someone will let me know if so.

Is there a map that charts all the fires in real time? I couldn't find one on KSL website.

On the way home, I drove past a bunch of those supermarket parking lot fireworks stands. Huge signs reading "aerials sold here." Have to admit, that made me a little nervous. There has to be a better way to celebrate the Fourth than by risking more destruction.
