I dont care too much if people say she is ugly. Maybe she is. But it is a rude thing to say. So if you want to say it and make a joke about it, go ahead. But at least own it. Yes, we are often jerks here.

It is rude to say, but is one necessarily a jerk if she can't be offended by the rudeness? That is my distinction. If you are rude about somebody who will never learn of your rudeness you are not being a jerk. To be a jerk, the person must be present.

Here we have a photo of a woman that might fit a similar mold. No comment is made about her appearance, although it is clear that a lot of inferences were made. People jump up to protest but the protesters are the ones that make the most blatant emphasis on this woman's attractiveness. How can you protest something that was never said unless you, yourself feel that this woman is unattractive?
