Bigots at the U

So I was talking to a doctor who is moving to the U of Utah for residency, and she just told me that faculty in her department at the U told her that her kids would absolutely have to attend private school if she comes to Utah "because of all the Mormons" in Utah public schools.

We had easter dinner with family and good friends and their children. The eldest daughter (19) of our good friends talked about how she was considering transferring to BYU and trying out for the track program. In fact she had just returned from a visit to Utah with a friend. They went down for conference and also so she could visit the campus and speak with the track coach.

Earlier this year she had talked about her aspirations with her former high school track coach. He said; "Oh, don't go there, that's where all the Mormons are!" She responded; "Yes ... I am a Mormon!"

Yeah that was me, sorry. I also told her if she took the kids to Hogle Zoo that we'd probably push them into the polar bear pool. We don't like having non-Mormons at the U.

Tell her there's a nice big private school down in Provo just waiting for them.

Or better yet: give them J. Golden Kimball's advice regarding escaping the Mormons. "Why don't y'all just go to hell? There won't be any Mormons there!"

Seems like a great deal for the citizens of Utah.

They still pay taxes yet there is not the burden to the schools. Utah should encourage this behavior.

She doesn't have to worry about it if she is in the Public School system in Salt Lake County or Park City.

A few times when non-LDS folks have transferred in and asked me about places to live I have suggested Park City or various places in Salt Lake County. I have told them to avoid Davis County or Utah County. I have even advised some non-active members the same way.

I wouldn't want my kids in a public school that was populated overwhelmingly, both faculty and student body, by scientologists. I'm probably a bigot too.

I am LDS and wouldn't live in Utah County. Not because I have any self loathing or think people living there are evil, I just don't like the culture and am more comfortable other places. I wouldn't want to live in Greenwich Village or on Castro Street in San Francisco either. Again, not out of a hate or even a dislike of those there. Just not the culture I want to be around every day.

I think this is what you are saying, which I agree with, that some folks are just more comfortable one place than another. And not because of bigotry.

That is what I am saying. As a matter of fact over conference weekend I heard an ad run by a private school. It's basic appeal was if you are LDS your kids will be more comfortable in this private school where the school practices LDS values. I didn't think for an instance it was a biggoted ad.

I think we throw around the words bigot and racism so much now they really have lost any real meaning. Those words ought to be saved for the "real" biggots and racists so the words mean something.

I did find that the students at the U and the Y both thought their student population was dramatically different than the population at the other school. My observation was that both student populations were very similar and the faculty population was more similar than it was different.

Ultimately, the schools are more like sister schools than they are like rivals. They have much more in common than they have differences.

I had a few classes were the profs would take some pot shots. I was personally never impacted by any bigotry. At least not that I knew of. Any "university" atmosphere will do that, regardless of the community.
In fact, I even got an A in my Women's Studies class, which was taught by a bra burning lib and TA'd by Lynne Whitesides (of the Sept. 7 fame). We had several in depth discussions, as I hadn't fully shed my mullah tendencies back then.

Can't speak to Y as I have only been on campus once. When the MTC caffeteria was down for a week and we had to eat meals over in the pasture.

Are they American protestants of some stripe? Is this just one of those tiresome pissing matches? If not, maybe Levin would be sympathetic to the concern expressed here. If I ever returned to Utah I'm sure I'd want to put my kids in private schools. Concern about Utah public schools is legitimate, but that isn't unique to Utah. I heard even Easth as gone to pot.

I agree about the students but the Professors are not even close. BYU professors are mormon.

Anywhere you go your kids are going to go to private schools. Utah, Seattle or DC
