I like the article a lot. It seems we're going with 1) Brigham Young made some non-doctrinal policy changes which were wrong and made some blunders in his teachings, but it's OK since it's all non-canonical 2) Because of this, it all evolved weird and wrong theories were perpetuated until it was fixed in 1978, and we're all good going forward. I like this explanation. What's tough to explain though is what's in the canon. I wonder if the church would modify any of this. It's already started to a little bit with the BOM.

I learned in church today that the PH ban was started by Joseph smith and that no black people were ordained prior to 1978.

While this is positive I find it still seem to "white wash" or downplay a lot of the church's history on this subject, IMHO. (See some example above.) A public apology for all the crap people in leadership and public positions in the church have said would much more of a positive step. And Randy Bott should be present for that public apology.

I was surprised at this article. It's a good step. It's not an apology, which I think is needed. Not only to blacks, but to generations of good members who needed to abandon their own sense of morality because the church told them God needed them to.

I would have liked them to be clear that it wasn't just theories, but church doctrine in every sense of the word. But I think the church did about as good as job as it could have done, given that it still needs members to treat leaders' words as revelation.

I need to shoot the link of this to a certain ex-bishop of mine, who was certain (and vocal) of the correlation between race and pre-earth valiance. I was unable to convince him otherwise. I wonder if this article would. I actually kind of doubt it. Like DS7 on CB, he would, I think, believe that the church is doing this simply for PR reasons, and that it is a sham.

it's always a bad idea to try and go back and re-write history...

by definition, if you have a "chosen race"...isn't everyone else "unchosen?"

that was the first line they tried to blur out...the idea that blacks wouldn't receive the priesthood "in mortality"...with this latest statement, it seems they're trying to walk back the idea that genesis 9 is just "a fable" and all the statements from the prophets and apostles were "uniformed."

do you know of any other church who teaches anything about lineage? it's even an important part of every faithful member's patriarchal blessing. it's an important part of the bible...pages and pages of who begat who...if lineage doesn't matter, why do we spend so much time doing genealogical work? none of the other christian churches teach anything about it...cause it's not important to them and they don't understand anything about it...to them, life is just one giant "birth lottery."
