I agree that it's good that this kind of thing is becoming more rare. I hope that this is something taking place at the initiative of the SP, rather than someone in SLC calling the shots (at least that's how it's supposed to work).

Of course, one of the enduring ironies is that these sorts of actions are generally undertaken to protect "the good name of the church" or "the interests of the church" or something like that. And, inevitably, it seems the church's reputation suffers as a consequence.

Some of the stories are not safe to tell in a public forum.

This has the makings of something that could really blow up and make for bad press for the church. Snuffer is probably a nut case, but he comes across very humble and sincere and certainly harmless.

Also, with all the qualified men in an area like Sandy, it seems really poor judgement to call the CEO of a questionably ethical MLM company to be a stake president. It seems the church would want to distance itself a little from the Utah MLM's.

There is a physician at my hospital who by all appearances is a very active and mainstream member. We've discussed Snuffer's work a few times and he's a big fan. I doubt he's the only one.
This is going to shake a few of the stalwarts.

Give him a chance before you call him a nutcase. I still haven't read anything, but I've listened to the same podcast as jl. He's very articulate and much saner than most of the people I see at church every week. That doesn't mean that exing him as wrong--just that your bar for 'nutcase' is very low.

I'm not as convinced that he's harmless to the church.

The strongest language I used is that he's "probably" a nutcase. For someone who has claimed to have met Jesus Christ, that's the most generous I can be.

See the first post in this thread and my review of the podcast to see more detail on my opinion and more info on connection to the physician community.

My fault...I didn't reread the thread. I'd even already commented.

For the record, I suspect that he's probably a nutcase insofar as he claims to have "seen" Jesus ("seen" in square quotes because I think it's far from clear what this means in the LDS tradition). Maybe this point is too obvious to make, but the kinds of arguments we tend to use to dismiss Snuffer are pretty much the same as the ones that non-believers use to dismiss Joseph Smith. That is, as the kids say, awkward.

In fact, it's prima facie just a little bit odd to hold that Snuffer is a nutcase because he claims to have seen Jesus when we all know very well that not even the apostles see him anymore. It's not surprising that Snuffer has garnered himself a following (which, in my view, would be the real problem here, rather than his own idiosyncratic views and personal experiences).

Yep, seems like a live and let live policy with these types makes sense -- especially since in the internet age it just gives these guys more attention and turns them into martyrs and heroes when they are disciplined by the Church.

On the other hand I think clearly the Church has the right of self-preservation and if they really think excommunicating a guy like this will keep the Church healthier and stronger than I guess that's what they should do. But to me honestly it seems short-sighted and counterproductive to go after somebody like this.

Just kills me that the guy who writes this letter heads a corporation where the entire business is based on fraudulent claims, and uses a business model that exploits and extracts money from the most vulnerable people in society by means of lies -- selling false hope of income and wealth in addition to its fraudulent products.

And it's Snuffer that stands against Jesus Christ here and this NuSkin guy who represents the interests of Jesus Christ and His Church?!

Totally ridiculous. Boy you can't make this stuff up.
I think that passes the irony test.

this is making the rounds in the Mormon themed FB groups. Two things stick out: it's so very close to the 20th anniversary of the September 6, which gives it an eery feeling; those close to Snuffer say that this is coming from above, not from his SP.
