Showing temple recommends before participating in a baby blessing. Don't know if this is required as of the new CHOI, but when I blessed my youngest I was forced to tell a loved & respected BIL to stay seated because he forgot his TR.

They don't. Who told you that the Bishop? You only need the Melchizedek priesthood. In fact, the CHOI explicitly says that church leaders should go out of their way to avoid embarrassing or offending families. You should point that out to whomever told you your BIL could not participate.Originally posted by sparky View PostShowing temple recommends before participating in a baby blessing. I had the same issue when I witnessed my niece's baptism. The bishopric member asked for my TR. Luckily, I had it, but thought it was pretty over the top.Originally posted by Surfah View PostThey don't. Who told you that the Bishop? You only need the Melchizedek priesthood. Yesterday, a good friend of mine (great guy, very straight laced) corrected his four-year old who took the bread with the left hand. It made me smile, but also made me a little sad.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

Why do Mos love "taco" soup so much? Or casseroles with ground beef and tortilla chips? It seems like I am seeing those dishes at most Mo get-togethers.

Yeah, so, you should have seen the backlash in my class when I states that (1) I hate being addressed as Brother, (2) the origins of the term were to emphasize that we are brothers and sisters and thus closer than strangers - we are kin and (3) the current usage of brother and sister does the exact opposite of that. Full on revolt.Originally posted by marsupial View PostWhen I was Primary President, my bishop would always address me as President Marsupial. I always called him by his first name because I am bratty like that. Also I feel like I am familiar enough with him and everyone else I worked with in the ward to be on a first name basis. The formality silly. We're supposed to be a ward family and we're all volunteers so the titles seem a little showy to me.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

I like the Brother and Sister thing. Allows me to address people I don't really know that well. Once I get to know them, then I drop the Brother and Sister stuff. In France, they rarely use the Brother and Sister stuff; everyone's on a first name basis. That was easier to get used to that the cheek kissing, which I avoided. But I still always called the Bishop, "Monsieur l'eveque."Originally posted by nikuman View PostYeah, so, you should have seen the backlash in my class when I states that (1) I hate being addressed as Brother, (2) the origins of the term were to emphasize that we are brothers and sisters and thus closer than strangers - we are kin and (3) the current usage of brother and sister does the exact opposite of that. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

For the life of me, I can't understand how those terms bug people. Seems completely harmless. Oh well.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostI like the Brother and Sister thing. I would be absolutely fine with this. But that's not what happens here. People I have known for years - friends - insist on calling me Brother + my last name. My name is niku. If you have known me for five minutes, you are okay to use my name. I have no objection to the terms per se but I hate the false distance it creates.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostI like the Brother and Sister thing. Interesting. I was told one time to ask any visitors who wanted to participate in a blessing to bring their Temple Recommend but then it wasn't enforced.Originally posted by sparky View PostShowing temple recommends before participating in a baby blessing. I have a hard time thinking any Bishop is going to stop somebody from standing in the circle or delay the blessing to force people to produce a recommend in the middle of Sacrament Meeting.

I grew up in a ward where the YM/YW leaders were called by their first names. It was the bishop, and he enforced it by stationing a counselor at the doorway of the chapel to verify TR's like the freaking gestapo. Apparently it is/was a mandate from the stake. And yes, it is embarrassing no matter how smoothly the TR probe goes.Originally posted by Surfah View PostThey don't. Who told you that the Bishop? You only need the Melchizedek priesthood. I would advise that all recommend holders not go to church for a few months in protest and let the Stake President explain the sudden rise in inactivity to the higher ups.Originally posted by sparky View PostIt was the bishop, and he enforced it by stationing a counselor at the doorway of the chapel to verify TR's like the freaking gestapo. Sure, taco soup looks like a bowl of puke, but it's to die for if prepared properly. I have a great recipe. I'll post it in the Diner sometime just for you.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostWhy do Mos love "taco" soup so much? Or casseroles with ground beef and tortilla chips?
