Why are they so unremittingly horrible? Because they are vacuous and banal. God isn't setting up a challenge for you. LDS sacrament meetings are what they are. Get a clue. Do something rewarding instead. Instead of sacrament meeting go on a walk or listen to Bach.
Why not get special iPod earphones that are either invisible or look like hearing aids, and just listen to Bach in sacrament meeting?

Then again, Bach was a very religious composer. Are you sure you want to recommend him? Why not Wagner or, for a more modern touch, Aaron Copeland?

I am in my own way a very religious person. I happen to be listening to this right now, in my hotel room in Chicago, which is why I said Bach, in addition to his being a very Christian composer:

When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Wagner is my favorite pagan composer. I am going to the Ring in August. My wife is trying to get me to dress like a barbarian the last night.
