There's a nice audio history of Praise to the Man here. I like to listen to the Mormon Channel podcasts on The History of Hymns sometimes while I am working out on Saturday mornings. The podcasts are about 30 minutes long and are quite interesting, especially the ones about the older hymns.

Looks like the podcast on "If You Could Hie to Kolob" is coming out soon....

"God made the angels to show His splendour - as He made animals for innocence and plants for their simplicity. But men and women He made to serve Him wittily, in the tangle of their minds."

Just pausing to note that Joseph and Hyrum were killed 168 years ago today. For better or worse those two lives profoundly impacted each of our own and while Joseph, in my view, gave people plenty of reasons to be angry with him, he certainly didn't deserve to die for it.

The more I learn about Nauvoo, the more I am convinced that Joseph Smith would have driven the church into the ground in 5-10 years if he had survived. Then again, having to spend 2-5 years in prison for destroying the printing press (among many other things) would likely have accomplished the same. Once the stories regarding dalliances with teenagers who lived in his house, often initiated by his 'an angel with a flaming sword ordered me to marry you' stories, his use of the 'Abrahamic Test' method of convincing men to allow their wives to sleep with him, etc. William Law could potentially prove JS had led the church into apostasy, as was his intention with the Nauvoo Expositor. (He did NOT want to disprove the church, only to show that JS was doing some bad things with his power).

On the other hand, if JS had survived and the church stayed in Nauvoo rather than move west to Utah to spend many decades in relative isolation the church probably would have gone in a more mainstream direction.
