    "Praise to the Man"

    Hymn #27 needs to be eliminated from the hymnal. It should never be sung in sacrament meeting. I'm fine with it remaining as an official church song but it has no place in sacrament meeting.

    I've heard it sung twice in the past two years and both times we had non-member friends in attendance. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but singing a song of praise to Joseph Smith is not the best way to introduce people to church services.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes.     I think we had a discussion in this somewhere previously. I agree completely.

    My mom is visiting us this week and she came to Sac today. It was primary program and the final number was PTTM. It was this special arrangement....the kids kept repeating Praise to the Man over and over again. The final verse, the entire congregation sings....Earth must atone for the blood of that man....yikes.

    I felt really uncomfortable, as well. I wish my mom were here when we sing I Believe in Christ or something like that.

      Then let's get rid of We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet, too.

      *Called to Serve is actually super retarded and I'd be stoked to be rid of it once and for all, too.

        Agree completely. Also why do we never song A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief anymore. I'm always mad when we sing praise to the man because that song is just a page over.

            Yeah, both have always felt weird for me to sing in sacrament meeting.

            Just weird. When they redid the hymnbook, no more "Come Thou Fount" but they kept "Praise to the Man."

              I subbed as the primary song leader today and took requests for favorite songs. It came up so I had them stand and sing.

                This is perhaps the best fight song in the hymnal, though The Spirit of God is close.

                      I remember making that observation on my mission after I became aware of Come Thou Fount (still one of my favorite hymns ever) and its former inclusion in the hymnal. It represents a very unfortunate choice of emphasis for the church.

                        I like the exclusion of "Come thou Fount". It helps to preserve that song, which has no business being a congregational hymn. I feel the same way about "O Holy Night"

                          I actually really like Praise to the Man, along with the other WW Phelps hymns. I'm not ashamed of Joseph Smith. In fact, Joseph Smith's First Prayer might be my favorite hymn.

                              What specifically is your objection? Maybe I need to reread the lyrics, but it seems like the doctrine in it is pretty main stream.
