I agree with RF... What's wrong with trick-or-treating on Sunday? You're just going door-to-door in the neighborhood. You're not working, selling or buying anything. Oh, but you are having fun and fun is absolutely prohibited on Sunday.

I remember being pissed as a teenager when the 4th of July landed on a Sunday and I was not allowed to go see the fireworks with my friends. What? Mormons are supposed to be patriotic. Our whole Sacrament meeting was devoted to patriotism and I couldn't go to the park and celebrate this great nation? I think it was back to the no having fun on Sunday. If it is fun, then it couldn't be appropriate for the Sabbath.

I loved it when Halloween hit on a Sunday. I would t-or-t on as many days as I possibly could.

Why was Trunk or Treat ever invented? Was it a response to those Halloweens that fall on a Sunday, so that a trick-or-treating experience could be had on Saturday? And then people thought it was so much fun so they organized trunk-or-treats every year, and not just the years Halloween falls on Sunday?

Personally, I don't see how Halloween breaks the sabbath, unless you are someone who thinks the sabbath needs to be spent reading scriptures and listening to church music.

Obviously it's so the children of God's chosen people don't have to eat Gentile candy. It's an in the world but not of the world thing.

We had a discussion about it last year (my wife and I), and quickly decided that there was no better sabbath activity than to spend time with our kids and neighbors, talking and walking through the neighborhood.

A couple of years ago our home teacher tried to come on Halloween night. When he called my wife politely told him "no way" but he showed up at the door anyway about an hour later. "Hey, here are some donuts. Everyone doing all right? OK, I guess we can count this as a visit then. Bye."

I spent a good portion of the evening out with my kids, and the rest scaring other people's kids with my remote control fog machine hidden on my front porch (two little kids sprinted off my porch so fast I had to go out to my lawn to give them candy). Grim Grinning Ghost playing the whole time on my front porch (I went light-hearted with the music this year).

I'm with you...what a great night.

First, the weather here in the 'Tah was like SoCal Halloween weather. Perfect evening with zero wind and temps in the low 60s dipping into the high 50s. Last year it was raining on Halloween. Lame. This year, perfecto.

This is our first Halloween in our new hood. We were very impressed. The community really gets into it. There is one area of 3 or 4 blocks that traditionally serve as the meeting place for the whole ward. So prior to the ToT, everyone meets at around 4:30 at a traditional house I'm the ward for a massive Soup potluck. Homemade soups everywhere, plus desserts. Kids running around, everyone mingling. At 6, everyone heads over to the designated ToT area of the ward and the fun begins.

Most of the homes are decked out...a couple of intricate haunted houses in the garage (very well done, I might add), one family does caramel dipped apples every year....the mom dips them right there and hands them to you all gooey and delish....another house does hot bevs for everyone, many garages converted into Halloween themed games in exchange for candy....it is a crazy block party. We had a blast.

The kids ran out of gas after a couple of hours, we now we are home and they are having fun handing out nosh to the teenagers roaming the area.

One of my fave aspects of the block party was that the adults all get into it, as well. Even most of the parents that were just walking their children door to door put on a mask or something.

I also saw some inspiring home lawn decor tonight. Next year I'm really stepping up my game. One house had a massive spider web hanging from roof to lawn, all made out of rope. I will try to snap a pic tomorrow morning. It is really incredible looking.

I agree with nik. Halloween is awesome. What a great night of fun. The kids are old enough to really enjoy it but young enough to want to stick with Mom and Dad. Heaven!

Ps saw several lazy costumes tonight.....a mom dressed as the aforementioned cat, a few teen girls in feet PJs, I saw a teen kid wearing a t shirt that said "costume," on it (), and my fave lazy costume was a woman who punted and just put on her ratty old robe and furry slippers and PJ pants. She was cruising around the hood telling everyone she was a "stressed mom." another from me for that lazy costume. Also saw several cross dressers, including two girls dressed as male missionaries. The Bishop and his wife dressed as a Priest and a nun, respectively. Loved it.
