No one in my ward wants to celebrate Mardi Gras.
"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

Way back when I was on a mission my mom sent me a few articles detailing a growing opposition to Halloween celebrations. Those causing the fuss were LDS women who were concerned about the evilness and pagan roots of the holiday. My mom, who is totally orthodox, thought they were nutters.

          He's lazy and unimaginative.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. Halloween is my favorite holiday. I don't mind having both a truck or treat and regular trick or treating. The trunk or treat is pretty cool - the adults go pretty bonkers with the costumes too, and it's nice to see all of our friends. Not necessary, but a fun activity.

But I think trick or treating is what makes things awesome. One of our neighbors (a chef) had a party last year for all of his neighbors and we got to hang out with people I only knew casually before that. There is another woman on my street that hosts a big block party some years. One year we made homemade root beer (nothing special: root beer extract and dry ice with water and sugar) and served it up to trick or treaters. It's one of the last true community holidays we have left. It's also the entry into the Thanksgiving/Christmas season, which is awesome. Time to start planning out what kind of turkey I will fry.

FTR, I have never seen anything as slutty (in terms of costumes) as Manhattan. Holy cow.

I'm in the Love Halloween crowd. It is a lot of fun. The costumes, kids getting excited, intro to the Holidays, candy everywhere. What's not to love?

This year we made an effort to ramp up the Halloween decor in and around the house. We did a cemetery in front of our house, hung orange lights on the balcony, put up a few of those huge black spiders crawling up the side of the house, I placed pumpkins all over the yard and on the steps leading up to the front door, our porch is decked out, the house has some fun stuff in the main rooms. It has been a blast.

Next year I think I'm going to do even more.
              Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

                Anti-Halloween is just more LDS anti-Catholic, anti-Old World, GAAB stuff. Anti-wine, anti-Catholic, anti-French, anti-Halloween, anti-scotch, anti-cross, anti-Greek (anti-Hellenization). All the same thing.

Don't forget antipasto, I love that.

Really? I mean, really? Do you really want to give beads to the RS Sisters?

There is almost no anti-Halloween movement among LDS people. I have never met a single LDS person who is anti-Halloween. Evangelicals are another story.

Agreed. I remember being a little creeped out a couple times by some ward members' enthusiasm about halloween, frankly. But that's probably just my anti-catholic tendencies coming out.

I agree. I have never heard anti-Halloween sentiment until moving to the South. I know people here who won't let their kids read Harry Potter or watch Wizards of Waverly Place and yet, one of the most famous modern Mormons has made it big writing about teenage vampires.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

If that's what you think Mardi Gras is all about, then you need to get ross to NOLA in February and see for yourself. Thinking that Mardi Gras is all about beads for boobs is akin to me going to a frat house on Halloween, filming the party, and then calling that "Halloween."

The Church has a Mardi Gras party in New Orleans. It's a family holiday.

We've amped up our decorations too. Cemetary, bones, fog machine, spider web, black lights, mood music (largely organ with some background stuff) and this year a moving ghoul that is motion activated. Next year I think I'll ad in some fake lightning and some other effects.

I have met a couple of LDS anti-halloween people - both back in the late 80s, both in Utah. These are the kids who wouldn't let their kids go trick or treating. But I agree it's more likely in the evangelical community. I assume most of you have heard of the Jesus-ween movement?
