Last week the older young men in our ward went on a "High Adventure" trip (which parenthetically was nothing like the high adventure trips we took as youth). One of the young men was asked to report on it:

Young Man: We were going to go fishing, but it rained and the boat wouldn't take us out.
YM President: So what did we do instead?
Young Man: We went to Wal-Mart

It wasn't the answer the YM President was looking for.

There's a small campground on our church property with picnic tables and a fire pit. Our scouts have used it on occasion.

Girls camp this year was done at the ward level. Is this a new church wide thing? Our girls had their camp this week at a state park about 40 minutes away.

Our girls always go to an out-of-town camp. It's always pretty close, but they do get away. I don't think there's any push from the church to go the meetinghouse route.

don't think so, ours was a stake thing.

Our stake went in with 6 others and bought a beautiful camp on the coast about 20 miles south of Ukiah. The girls have been going there as a stake for 2 years now.

You misunderstood me. Our stake no longer does girls camp. In previous years the entire stake would go to an out of town camp. This year however each ward is doing their own girls camp. I think our young women were a bit frustrated with this directive since we have a tiny ward with only 6 young women. I know it frustrated the leaders. That's probably why Gabers ward ended up at the stake center. No budget and lack of resources from the stake.

In my area, girls camp rotates on a stake and ward level every other year.

                      That does sound pretty frustrating.

In our stake (or at least ward) there isn't much of a budget for girls camp and we don't have anything like the church owned Heber Valley Camp (or a church owned camp of any kind) near by. After hearing about the lame girls camps that my daughters attended I decided it wasn't right so I invited her and the other Laurels to go with our Venture Crew on some activities (including shooting shotguns, rock climbing, etc). The guys generally like it as well.

The BSA Venture Crew program was designed to be co-ed. Personally, I don't know why the church doesn't recognize that fact and encourage more co-ed activities for that age group. It seems to me that a lot of Laurels don't care for the YW activities that much and stop showing up on Wednesdays. While they are not "inactive" when it comes to church they are inactive when it comes to YWs.

This is what my Stake does.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Yeah, it put a huge burden on our small ward to plan and support the camp. We had to have priesthood leaders rotate in and out for 3 days. Of course this is required for the typical Stake camps, but it's not as essential when you have multiple men there from other wards and the Stake. It required several people going up on Sunday (Father's Day) to set up camp. But really I think it was disappointing that the girls didn't get to associate with other girls/friends in the stake and it also deprived some of them from the opportunity of being camp leaders. Overall, the reports we got back Sunday were positive (despite thunderstorms and rain everyday). So that was encouraging.

I wasn't sure if this was just a stake thing or something the Church is moving towards. I am still unclear as to what prompted the stake to make Girls camp a ward activity. I suspect it was budget.

In our stake the wards each pay a certain amount for each girl they send to camp. The girls in our ward sold cookie dough to raise money and the ward paid nothing (the cookie dough was a very popular and lucrative product). Anyway, that worked for us. It may be helpful that our SP is a former stake YM president and his wife was stake YW president for 10 years and is now a ward YW president.
