So, let's engage some of our considerable collective CUF talent writing haikus about the Church. I'll leave this open for a month and we'll see what the results are.

Arrgh! I am a format nazi. First, a primer on what the bare-bones element of a haiku are
1. 3-7-5 syllables
2. Must contain a seasonally- suggestive word
3. Must contain a word with two meanings around which the haiku is built, either for ambiguity or reinforcement.
If you can meet those three elements about the church, have at it. Otherwise, I'd suggest a different format, cuz it ain't a haiku.

Technically, they're "ons," or "moras" in linguistic speak, not syllables. So Kyoto has two syllables in English, and four moras, Kyo-o-to-o. However, I'm not worried about the sacred syllables (Om!), I just want some fun, and/or spiritual, haikus.

Not sure what you mean by rule #2.

You're not the only one with a linguistics background; I'm well aware of the technical terms but am making it accessible for the common man. However, I am a learned man when it comes to haiku and I'm telling you that if you break my rules it ain't a haiku whether you call it one or not.

I always thought it was 5-7-5. Am I wrong?

No, that's my error (damn iPhone). 5-7-5 is correct.
Jeff, to answer your question, the Japanese word is 季語 (kigo). A classic example would be to use the word "sakura" to evoke images of spring. Words like "yuki" or even "shiro" would do the same for winter, or "semi" for summer, "ochiba" for fall, etc. It can be much more subtle than that.
Kakarikotoba - the third rule - are more difficult, although the word "pine" is a great example in both languages ("matsu" in Japanese).
