That is jaw-dropping to me. Knowing what most residencies require and gleaning what being a bishop requires I don't think there are enough hours in the week.

What a relevant and valuable observation you have made here! Nobody can ever say that you did not do your part in fostering productive dialogue on our fair board. Thumbs up, big man.

          Oh please.

          I mean it. Oh please.
          Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Having just read this thread in its entirety, I have to applaud the trolling effort.

If you remove all those complexities from the equation, you are then free to enjoy the Bishop as a guy that is dedicating a lot of time to try to help others. And in that, it is hard for me to find fault.

If I were as articulate as you, this is what I would have said.

I have an independent, anti-authoritarian streak too.

While some Bishops have the corporate Mormon feel, many do not. I've met enough Bishops who didn't fit the Jello mold that I'm not willing to generalize.

Stake Presidents are another matter, though. That's where corporate Mormonism really begins. Although I am willing to live and let live, I tend to not mesh with SPs on a personal level. Some of this may be due to the fact that, at this point in time in the LDS Church, there is significant tension between the ward and stake levels.
We all trust our own unorthodoxies.

I wonder if it has something to do with the contact with the people. Bishops really get to know their flock. They might overlook the frailties because they know the balancing good qualities.

SP's may just see the folks who don't "toe the line" as pain in the butt's.

I will admit my view comes from a very subjective position. I have known and associated closely with a lot of Bishops I have only associated with ex Stake Presidents. I will say they were really great guys, but I don't know how they operated when in office.

Sometimes I even can't separate truth from trolling.

My premise is pretty outlandish, and it's probably framed that way to troll a little. But there is also some truth behind it. To my credit, I acknowledge it as a character defect.

Jay Santos, I applaud you for acknowledging that which we can all plainly see. That is a huge first step.

Meh, nobody's perfect, but the original premise is unfair. I think if anything, they're guilty of an inability to say no. Outside of UT/ID area, the bishops I've encoutered spend far more time with welfare issues than anything.

I do sometimes wonder what keeps some of you from leaving altogether. I realize the forum is usually a place where the frustrations are highlighted and therefore not the complete picture and I don't presume to judge anyone's personal convictions. But if it's a net negative, why continue?

If you leave, it's harder to stay abreast of new things to bitch about.

Other than all the cool stories you get to hear why would any body want to be a bishop. It's just like a little league coach you disagree with, just shut your mouth and be grateful someone else is willing to spend their time doing it so you don't have to.

You would be shocked how much time it takes to search and destroy the souls counsel YM who are regularly staying abreast with their girlfriend.
