I don't have much time, so sorry if this was already posted, but I think I just realized why the Church made this announcement. See Barzee and Mitchell. Apparently their bishop hooked them up with this weird group counseling thing.
Steele: What kind of group counseling was it?
Barzee: I was told I was gonna learn how to get in touch with feelings so I wouldn't get depressed.
Steele: What kind of things were talked about in the group counseling, all about depression or were there other things?
Barzee: There were other things that were indicative of problems that people had.
Steele: Was depression something you all shared … ?
Barzee: I don't remember.
Steele: How did you become close through the group counseling?
Barzee: My bishop told me I would meet someone who had the kind of problems I had. I was introduced to Brian in the ward and then I … over a problem I had previously dealt with children that didn't want to say anything. But Brian came walking in and when Jolene Green got near to me, she opened my heart to what was bothering me. There was a married man there who wanted to comfort me by holding my hand and when Jolene got around to Brian … he wanted to be the one comfort to comfort me and he held my hand. And we held hands from then on.That which may be asserted without evidence may be dismissed without evidence. -C. Hitchens

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.
Woot
I believe religion has much inherent good and has born many good fruits.

I've refrained from talking on this subject as I have some close relatives involved in one of these groups. I've never attended (even though I have been invited to do so for free) and I don't know much about it. I just dont understand the hate people have for these groups. They obviously have helped some people as why would more people sign up if they didnt? if you went through and it seemed not your thing then you don't go again. Just my $.02"Be a philosopher. Being perfectly serious, I went to the "intro" to one of these once (I think Gabers was there too?). I did it to appease my baby-mama who I was not getting along well with at the time. I will say that it really seemed to help her and it is where she met her husband who is a great dude. So truthfully, I'm not that down on them. But to understand why people think it is strange I think you need to go experience it for yourself. They use every trick in the book to manipulate emotional relsponse from music, to near dark lighting, to keeping you up to the wee hours of the morning, to trying to get you to share intimate details with strangers, having almost ritualized things that you learn to say in front of the group, things they say back....it is weird as hell.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostI've refrained from talking on this subject as I have some close relatives involved in one of these groups. Like I say, it really seemed to help them so that is great. But it weirded me out.

I'd generally base a conclusion on whether these groups help people on some actual data. Opinions aren't enough. Opinions are why medicine used to consist of practices like bloodletting or giving people arsenic as a medication. That which may be asserted without evidence may be dismissed without evidence. -C. Dont forget Reike!
This letter was probably intended as a shot over the bow of all of these self help awareness/MLM/Primerica/Selfhealing groups out there...My Mom has gone so crazy into her Reiki Healing stuff its scary..same wolf new lamb skin..Some how my very faithful lds mother, after a couple of months of classes is now a "Certfied Healer'... and $5,000 poorer..according to my dad..Laying on of hands and all types of nonsense.......metaphysicalquantamspiritualjapanes babble..seriously you should the family scatter after sunday dinner when she starts trying to talk about it......you get the idea..all of them basically will engender a belief that true healing and peace can only be found thru their program...that somehow christ and the atonement are not enough for some people...you see where that leads...You pulling out your checkbook!!Last edited by jboyaz; 11-19-2010, 07:43 PM.
