I patiently waited for someone to bust that one out.

"Now I say that I know the meaning of my life: 'To live for God, for my soul.' And this meaning, in spite of its clearness, is mysterious and marvelous. Such is the meaning of all existence." Levin, Anna Karenina.

To laugh & smile with your spouse, kids & grandkids -- family. Eternal families....the church knocked this one out of the park.

        Oh, and dogs too.

RobinFinderson, this is a great question. My companion and I have a brief video that we want you to see. It answers your exact question!

If one doesn't assume God (or some sort of plan beyond ourselves) how can we conclude that the purpose of life is anything other than to pass on DNA?
The question does not assume the existence of God. People who believe in God/s will probably interpret the question to mean 'what is THE purpose of life,' and the purpose would hold true for all people. An equally correct interpretation of the question would be what you suggest, which is 'what is the purpose that I have give to my own life.' For either interpretation one would presumably try to bring one's life into harmony with the stated purpose, which would be a goal.

For those of us who don't believe in God/s, the purpose of life is whatever we say it is. It could be a highly individual purpose, such as, "The purpose of my life is to kill Bill." Or it could be more universal, which is what I tried to define in my own stated purpose.

But if there is no God, or at least no controlling plan (which implies a God) then although you might impute a broad purpose to your existence, you are wrong. You are a chemical curiousity and moving the DNA molecule is your purpose. You might have goals, but they exist only because you have chosen them.

Now if you want to believe in somethign beyond yourself, which your question even as modified implies, then your belief as to your purpose might be correct. Or so it seems to me, anyway.
                PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Good answer. The purpose of life is to figure out the purpose of life.

No one said anything about imputing a broad purpose to existence, and that isn't implied by the question. When I wrote that a stated purpose could be more 'universal,' I simply meant that I had tried to describe the defined purpose of my life in a way so that other people could see how such an approach to life might be useful to them.

Ok, got it. When you say 'the' I assume you mean 'the.' In fact you appear to mean 'a' or 'your.' Thanks for clarifying.

To make covenants with God, and to keep them by using the power of the Atonement to change our Will so that it will align with God's.

And to pass through the "refiner's fire" by having your mother-in-law torment you by living with you for 6-months a year...
