This seems like a fun thread, but I'm not sure what to think about it. Orthodox believers can be much, much closer to atheism or agnosticism than can heterodox belivers. The heterodox are often closer to universalism or another form of religious pluralism than they are to atheism.

This thread seems to be arranging all of us according to acceptance of the LDS Church's dogma, but that's a long way from arranging us according to being dogmatic. SU, in his own way, can be every bit as dogmatic as can orthodox LDS believers.

I was thinking the same thing. SU has a box wrapped around him so tight he can barely breathe. Robin on the other hand is so outside the box, there is no box.

Not to thread-jack (and I don't think that will happen), but I wonder what the response would be to a different question: How seriously do you take your religious faith? Robin and SU would not really be able to answer that one since it doesn't apply to them (then again, neither does orthodoxy), but I hope they will comment on the question.

I ask this because I am generally more interested in how seriously people take their faith than in how orthodox they are in that faith. Among some religions (Judaisim, for example) a person's level of seriousness generally determines whether they consider themselves reformed, conservative or orthodox (and I repeat, that is a broad generalization). I don't think that's the same with Mormonism.

By taking faith seriously I mean simply that a person says to him or herself: "The principles/beliefs/requirements of my faith are important to me and I make a serious effort to live up to them." I think that idea goes to the heart of what it means to be a believer. I tend to respect such people greatly. (Zealotry does not equate with seriousness, BTW, at least not in my lexicon.)

Note: I am making these comments rather abstractly and have no one and no point of view in mind. I simply find serious people to be interesting -- serious Catholics, serious Presbyterians, serious Mormons, serious Jews, and certainly serious agnostics and atheists.

I just realized that is a very orthodox statement. I might move myself up a bit.

I would put Art about there too, although once we are in the more orthodox section people get pretty tightly bunched.
