How orthodox are you?

Not to thread-jack (and I don't think that will happen), but I wonder what the response would be to a different question: How seriously do you take your religious faith? Robin and SU would not really be able to answer that one since it doesn't apply to them (then again, neither does orthodoxy), but I hope they will comment on the question.

I ask this because I am generally more interested in how seriously people take their faith than in how orthodox they are in that faith. Among some religions (Judaisim, for example) a person's level of seriousness generally determines whether they consider themselves reformed, conservative or orthodox (and I repeat, that is a broad generalization). I don't think that's the same with Mormonism.

By taking faith seriously I mean simply that a person says to him or herself: "The principles/beliefs/requirements of my faith are important to me and I make a serious effort to live up to them." I think that idea goes to the heart of what it means to be a believer. I tend to respect such people greatly. (Zealotry does not equate with seriousness, BTW, at least not in my lexicon.)

Note: I am making these comments rather abstractly and have no one and no point of view in mind. I simply find serious people to be interesting -- serious Catholics, serious Presbyterians, serious Mormons, serious Jews, and certainly serious agnostics and atheists.

This is an interesting distinction, and one that you could apply to most any topic. When it comes to atheism, there are a ton of folks who either grew up not believing or hopped on the bandwagon when it became the it thing to be, but who don't know much about why religions are wrong or why god isn't necessary to explain anything. I don't mind this, as one shouldn't need to know any specifics about why god doesn't explain anything to resist the urge to believe.

I also agree that someone who has hung around CUF for a few months who has had the arguments presented and still believes is a better, more respectable believer than the average member who doesn't know much about what they think they believe, yet I don't know that orthodoxy would be a good measure of that.

This is probably my least favorite scripture. It is too often used to rationalize that it is better to be evil than to be on the border in your thoughts/actions. I just cannot fathom that God would rather us be evil than in the middle.

I'm sad Indy stopped posting, and I wonder if has to do with religion. I'm sad many of the good BYU posters that are active LDS seem to be increasingly uncomfortable here.
