If I'm breaking the WOW, it isn't going to be for coffee. No desire there.

I'm much less orthodox now than when I was younger.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostWhile we're talking about updating orthodoxy status let me relate the tale of my 82 year old mom drinking coffee for the first time in her life. We were in the mall recently and we split up to look at a couple of things. When we met back at Barnes and Noble I found her in Starbucks with a cup. I know it's pretty easy to get something WOW-friendly there so I assumed she got some frappe thing. But when I sat down she told me that those pumpkin spice latte pictures at her grocery store Starbucks seemed so enticing. So she decided to scratch that itch. Verdict? She thought is was OK, drank about a third of it, and then gave me the rest. She said she's happy she did it to see how it tasted, and now she doesn't have to get it again. Riiiiiight Mom. Just wait until your sweet tooth finds a mocha.
But there was no guilt or shame in her sin. This is the person who told me when 2 brothers stopped church activity that she was going hardcore on temple visits and eschewing rated R movies, in an effort to get a miracle for us to return to church. That was on top of what I would consider a pretty orthodox member for most of my life.
That would be another interesting angle to the orthodoxy question. As you get older, how has your level changed? Would any of our seasoned members here wave away such an ingrained part of our culture/doctrine by drinking coffee?"I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

I am as well, but I'm also more committed to the Gospel now that when I was younger. It's been a weird transition to dump the orthodoxy but pick up the desire to serve and do church related things.Originally posted by Pelado View Post

What if I told you that there is coffee out there so exquisite that if you had an inkling of what you are missing by not tasting it, you would be crushed and debilitated under an intolerable weight of despair and regret?Originally posted by beefytee View PostIf I'm breaking the WOW, it isn't going to be for coffee. Coffee has never interested me. I've never liked the smell of it and have never needed something to wake me up in the morning. Now that I have diabetes, I'd have to drink it black, which sounds really, really bad. I'll stick with my Coke Zero, which is the nectar of the gods.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View Post

Why anyone would prefer Diet Coke over Coke Zero is beyond me.Originally posted by Moliere View Post

There is so much truth here. Also, I can't explain it, but coffee is somehow a social drink that nothing else non-alcoholic can be. You'd think hot chocolate would work as a substitute, but somehow it just doesn't.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View Post

Sidenote: maybe I already drank so much diet soda that caffeine was already a big part of my life but the "wakes you up" and "habit forming" part of coffee is highly overrated. I drink it because I like the taste, I like sitting around with friends and family or co-workers and shooting the shit over it in the mornings. But the other stuff gets a big meh. I suspect many of you with your diet soda consumption would have similar feelings as far as coffee being extra stimulating or habit forming. Brigham knew what was up when he included it in his supplies on the trek west.

I'm not a soda guy either.
Caffeine doesn't wake me up. At most it gives me the jitters. I don't like it.
My wife drinks caffeinated soda to help with migraines, but won't after 4PM, because it will keep her up at night. I have no problem falling asleep right after consuming one.
So, no coffee, no Coke. I think all the varieties taste disgusting. Dr. Pepper is the only thing close to a cola that is consumable.
I'll mostly stick with water, with some milk or fruit juice.
It's funny, I have a business trip coming up and a co-worker is planning a dinner and was asking about dietary restrictions. I told her, I eat and like everything, but don't drink anything.
