    3 Nephi 26

Okay, I admit it. I'm finally reading this stuff.

Anyway, 3 Nephi 26: 13-16. The last verses about the children. What is the takeaway lesson here?

There's a couple of different things going on. You've got a Pentecost-style imparting of of the Spirit, you've got the children teaching their parents, and then you've got this indiscernible supernatural language thing going on. What is the moral of the story, as you understand it?

I'm assuming you guys don't believe in speaking in tongues, right?

we believe speaking in tongues to be learning languages easily. As for the mouth of babes it goes back to believe in the pre life spirit world. Since babies are close enough to remember what it was like before they came down to this earth if their tongues were loosed it would provide marvelous things about living with god.

We believe in the gift of tongues beyond just learning languages easily. At least I do.

Actually the early Mormons used to speak in tongues in the more traditional stuttering and stammering way. It was all the rage. The 'learning languages easily' thing was a much later interpretation.

I wasn't being difficult I think tongues are languages and the gift is the ability to speak ad/or understand them.

other uses strike me as vainglory.

I don't think this gift exists without also the gift of being able to interpret or understand being present.

I'm sure pelagius or AA will offer a much more substantive answer, but I'll give it a shot. We believe in the gift of tongues, but our understanding of that gift seems to have evolved throughout time. Early in our church history there were documented instances of a pentacostal style manifestation of the gift, the dedication of the Kirtland temple being the most notable. At that time, some were given the gift of tongues and others the gift of translation. This type of event seems to have subsided over the past 100 years.

Many members today view the gift as the ability to speak a foreign language to teach the gospel as MRD has explained.

This is accuarte, IMO. IN the rearly days it was clearly a pentecostal type manifestation. That does nto happen, alhtough I think it might again sometime. Most do think it now refers to learnign and using other languages.
                    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

                      From the Articles of Faith:

                      7. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.

To me there is more to it than the ability to learn and teach the gospel in multiple languages. But consider that in my family of four brothers two of us speak French and the other (MRD) speaks Portuguese and Spanish.

I should also mention that our sister studied Hebrew and her husband speaks Italian. Also, my wife speaks French.

A very nice summary in my view ... The one clarification that I would add is that Joseph Smith by at least 1839 certainly viewed the missionary work/foreign language part as the most important manifestation of the gift (although I think he had a more sudden onset of foreign language proficiency in mind than we do these days):

Tongues were given for the purpose of preaching among those whose language is not understand; as on the day of Pentecost, etc., and it is not necessary to be taught in the Church particularly, for any man has that has the Holy Ghost can speak of the things of God in his tongue as well as to speak in another; for faith comes not by signs but by the hearing of the word of God. --Joseph Smith 1839 [TJPS]
                          and
Be not so curious about tongues, do not speak in tongues except there be an interpreter present, the ultimate design of toungues is to speak to foreigners and if persons are very anxious to display their intelligence, let the speak to such in their own tongues. --Joseph Smith 1842 [TJPS]

Also Babs if you ever need short summaries of current Mormon doctrines and topics I suggest the following:

True to the Faith: A Gospel Reference

Its superficial but useful and an official source.
