A few years ago when I was in Manhattan, we attended church in the same building where the temple is. It turned out that Gifford Nielsen was visiting that day, just on vacation. Apparently all general authorities at any level have to check in at meetings they attend, so he was sitting on the stand. In Elders Quorum later, he was pretty good at letting everyone else voice their opinions. But I think he made some sort of summary at the end.

I appreciate being able to attend a random church meeting on vacation without having formally let any leaders know that you're there. But I guess that's part of the calling.

      Always.

Attending other wards while on vacation is usually one of the highlights of the vacation. My kids enjoyed Philadelphia and remember Independence Hall but they don't still talk about Independence to this day. They do talk about the diverse choir that sang in Sacrament Meeting in inner-city Philadelphia. They also talk about the time they all got a lei attending church in Hawaii (I guess it was give a lei to visitors day or something because we've been to plenty of different wards in Hawaii but we don't usually all get a lei). We don't typically stay after Sacrament meeting but once my wife and I were in Preston England and we enjoyed the friendliness of the little ward there so much that we stayed for Sunday School and Priesthood/RS.

I also go to church when I'm on business trips. Joining the humble saints in New Delhi for Sacrament Meeting is very rewarding. I posted here about one of my experiences giving out a Book of Mormon to Ashish a few years ago. Trying to hunt down the church in a foreign country and figure out the local meeting time and location and listening to Sacrament Meeting in a foreign language is always part of the fun.

Agreed, but I don’t always go. I try to go but won’t go totally out of my way to attend church. MJ and I skippped church once in Normandy in favor of doing a WW2 tour. But some of my church attendance highlights have come from vacation. Once I attended church with Mitt Romney in Paris. Church is Renens Switzerland was cool as they spent a ton of time figuring out how the ward was going to attend the temple dedication that was coming up. I’ve also been invited to dinner/lunch a couple times.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. • I guess if you count going to church with the in laws or parents during Christmas break, then I went on vacation. But during a planned vacation away from family? Never. Not even once. And neither when I was a kid.

I had grandparents in Manti. I remember as a kid visiting them for a couple of weeks and going to church. Those kids were not friendly with outsiders--very clique-ish--so I always dreaded it.

Come to think of it, I probably work with some of them in my full time job, and those Sanpeters are actually pretty great.

My polygamy heritage is found in Sanpete County - Manti area - late 1800's. I'm betting our great-great-grandfathers knew each other. I'm pretty sure my family was not kind to outsiders.

                Sorry

                • We don't always go, it depends a little on how crazy our itinerary is. But we have had some wonderful experiences over the years.

I took my wife and two older boys to Japan and we visited my last mission area. I translated for them. One of my converts bore his testimony and called me out and talked about how he went on a mission a 2-3 years later. He recounted how many people he had baptized on his mission and how several of his converts had gone on missions, etc. He said there were at least 150 people in the church resulting from my encounter with him one day by a train station and that didn't count the converts from other people he knew that I baptized that later went on missions. Both of my boys said later that it had a huge impact on them.

Like I said earlier, going to church is Hawaii is always fun.

Went to church in Khatmandu, Nepal and met some amazing local members. There was also an older missionary couple that invited us over dinner after church - they were desperate to visit someone from home. Had a really fun afternoon with them and heard some amazing stories.

I have been to church in Florence and Venice, Italy. Both were fun. Ran into one of my former YSA students on a mission.

Attended in the Netherlands. Beautiful walk to church.

Attended in Australia and went to priesthood and SS. Every time a question was asked everyone would look at me or they would give the answer and ask me if that was correct. It was funny, but embarrassing. Great people.

Twice from Kapaa 1st ward, twice from the one in Puerto Vallarta. All very memorable.

Most of that was probably because I was a dork as a kid. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I ever grew out of it. But for some reason I get along with them a lot better now.

This is my experience as well. We never did on family vacations growing up. If our family vacations now were in exotic locations I would probably attend church. But Las Vegas or Boise ain't going to happen.

Vacation in La Barge? Maybe it is you who should GTFO.

The only time I've been to La Barge was when the ChE department took a field trip to the refinery there. Pretty much put the final nail in my desire to be a chemical engineer and I decided to go to law school soon thereafter. Thanks, La Barge!
