I love when the Samoans in our home ward say Talofa.

I am not opposed to the Saints in Hawaii doing it; I find it quaint and delightful. Or the Saints anywhere else doing local traditions. And if they bring that to their BYU ward, I can see that.
I was just "ugh" when the blonde vacationer showed dissapointment that her Colorado congregation didn't jump in on it. I do give her credit for not forcing a repeat to get a more robust "Aloha" response. Later in the meeting the 10-year-old daughter shared her testimony of the Spirit of Jesus being abundant in Hawaii.
That family had an awesome vacation! I'm jealous.

Do you all attend church when you vacation elsewhere? I confess, I never do.Originally posted by myboynoah View Post

We do if it's convenient. Sometimes out of a sense of duty. When we visited Hawaii, I felt a strong feeling of deja vu much of the time, particularly quite strong during church. I'm not sure what I was remembering, but I loved it. I took it as a sign that I should retire there.Originally posted by Soccermom View Post

Always, if we can. Sometimes when we've arrived in another country on a Saturday we were not able to figure out where the church was by Sunday morning. Once in Puerto Vallarta it was stake conference and we went to the wrong building before we found out. Didn't want a long taxi ride to the other one to then walk in late.Originally posted by Soccermom View Post

I quite enjoy visiting other wards wherever we're vacationing. We'll attend non-denominational meetings on cruise ships too, if we get the chance.

Did we ever talk about Camp Bellows on the North Shore? We stayed there a bunch back in the day - has a great beach.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View Post

Church in Hawaii is great. You can go in your flip flops and you won't meet nicer people.Originally posted by Soccermom View Post

In Hong Kong, everyone starts their talks "Brothers and sisters, good morning", and the congregation all responds "Good morning". Also, my MP was from Hawaii and always did the "Aloha" thing, so I got very used to call and response in church talks. Having said that, when someone busts out an "Aloha" in the lower 48, I will admit that my response is frequently tepid.

They will totally understand if you bail after sac. 75% of the people will do the same. Then get in line to take a picture of yourself in front of the church.Originally posted by Soccermom View Post

We don't always hit church on vacation, but it isn't uncommon. We've had both great and horrible experiences. Either way, typically we just do Sacrament Meeting.
As a kid growing up, my Dad, his brothers, and pile of kids numbering somewhere between 25-40 would all go spend a long weekend in Mackay, Idaho, each year to do some fishing. We'd all go to church and fill the overflow. We were consistent enough that folks there knew our name - or at least our last name and would call us "Brother Eddie" when we showed up.
I hit a sacrament meeting in DC once, and still smile as I think of the kid sitting at the sacrament table wearing a 6 inch gold crucifix while he blessed the sacrament.
My wife and I did church in Hawaii because due to the time change we'd wake up at 5am and had nothing to do that early in the morning. We decided to hit an 8am Sacrament Meeting and chuckled when the Bishop conducting thanked us for getting up early to go - nothing else was going on that morning.
In a very general sense - we try to maintain some semblance of "keeping the Sabbath holy" when on vacation. That doesn't necessarily mean doing exactly what we'd do at home, but it does typically mean not doing the exact same thing as we'd do on other vacation days. For example - in Hawaii we chose Sunday to go visit Punch Bowl, the Arizona, etc., rather than spending the day at the beach.
I don't care what others do - that's just what has worked for us.

In Harlem after Sacrament Meeting closing prayer, everyone stays in their seats while visitors stand and introduce themselves. After the introduction, the entire congregation says "Welcome" in unison. It really grew on me over the years we spent there and the few times I have been back I enjoyed receiving the welcome.
In my younger adult years, I avoided church on vacation like the plague. The exception was foreign countries. While we didn't go out of the way to change our plans for church, we always tried to hit a sacrament meeting when possible to take in church in a different cultural setting. My wife has a nasty habit of telling the leaders that I play piano when she sees they don't have anyone to play for sacrament meeting. That's how I ended up playing for sacrament meeting in Northern Ireland. One of my favorite memories is my wife being drafted to sing in a RS musical number in Panama during sacrament meeting. She doesn't speak Spanish and really stuck out with bright blonde hair and being about 5 inches taller than the average height of the rest of the participants. Also attended in Jerusalem and Istanbul, both of which were great experiences.
Now that I'm a bit older, I still don't plan around it but find myself going to sacrament meeting on vacation more often. A few weeks back I was in NYC with my brother and his friends and decided to get up early on Sunday to catch a Sacrament meeting. One of his friends surprised me and said he would come with me. My brother who is out opted for the extra sleep. I enjoy fellowship with the saints more than I ever thought I would, and experiencing it in different cultures and locations helps me to recognize how important it has become in my life.
I don't think I'll ever go to Sunday School or EQ on vacation though. That would be crazy.
