Instead we camp on ward member's property (for free) or at the local park (which is free for scout troops). I give a lot to the local troop (both monetarily and in-kind) so I don't feel bad at all not donating to FoS.
Sounds like you need a leader willing to ignore the CHOI.

When we visited my parents' ward in January, the combined 5th Sunday lesson was a Friends of Scounting fundraiser. They even passed around the collection envelopes and urged people to cut a check for "their obligation" then and there. It was one of the more distasteful things I've seen at church.

We have ward leaders who are fine ignoring it (and do to some extent), but the stake is the one that enforces the law.

        • Hold the phones, people. The top scouting executive's $1.6M salary was just a one-time anomaly due to his retirement. His real salary was only $600K.

Of course, you have to look at the entire compensation package to get an accurate number.

This guy claims that not only does the top exec make in excess of $1M per year, but that they always travel first class and enjoy other perks:

          • Any Bott-ology in Church today? A man in our ward just got up in F&T and made reference to the events of the past week. He stated more or less that while the Church is under attack by the media, we can pray if we have doctrinal questions and we can receive answers. The part that I found most interesting was that he said that he prayed this week and feels peace about the Church's "swift response."

I thought that was interesting. Im somewhat tempted to ask him privately to expound on that but it is obviously a personal issue and not appropriate. But I'm curious.

I just noticed that our HPG lesson scheduled for next Sunday is "George Albert Smith manual, Chaper 5 The Holy Priesthood – For the blessing of God’s children."

              Should be interesting.

This is one of the biggest problems with the Church's wishy-washy response to this situation. Too many TBM's are going to see this as an unjustified attack on the Church and keep looking out at the scary, wicked world trying to destroy the Church instead of being introspective. Wagons were circled, fingers were pointed, folklore was entrenched.

No other temples were mentioned, at this point it is unclear what other locations get monthly walks.

I've had a hard time prepping this week's lesson (Isaiah's a bit too dense to cover satisfactorily in a 35 minute lesson), and I'm seriously thinking of opening up with Bottomania and turning it over to the class for discussion. Mrs. PAC can't kick me from where she sits, so I may go with this.

Is Schultz still the temple president? I'll have to ask Conrad if that is true.

Related, I have a buddy that is now head of security at the DC temple. He is often times the only guy at night in the temple. He said at first it creeped him out and every bump and noise would scare him. He has not seen Jesus yet.

I had to teach EQ today. I struggled for topics and themes being presidency's choice so I ended up giving a State of the EQ address. Nobody stood and clapped.

In EQ, applause isn't the metric. How many people weren't staring at their phones or iPads?
                              Not that, sickos.

Not directly. Our EQ president mentioned the revelation of 1978 but didn't talk at all about what happened this week. Sometimes I wonder if my ward is in a bubble and they just don't pay attention to current events.
