This correlation mantra is becoming one of my pet peeves.

It seems to me that it is used increasingly by apostate Mormons that bemoan the fact that other Mormons still believe the basics of the gospel.
No, I have no problem with someone believing the basics of the gospel, for the gospel really is nothing more than the good news that Jesus died for us, that we might be forgiven. I have no problem with people believing the Joseph Smith story, either. On a certain level I believe it too.

I take issue with the ways in which the church seeks to control information about its origins and history. I take issue with the ways in which they distort historical documents to prove a predetermined conclusion, even when the evidence doesn't support that conclusion, or at the very least it doesn't exclude all other possible conclusions, as they would have you believe.

NWU's example of Noah in the seminary manual is a prime example. I think we should look at the "Teachings of [insert prophet's name here]" series in this light as well. I'm not proposing a viable remedy, as we've gone so far down the correlation path that it literally has become the sole mean of discourse within the church. It permeates and defines the very being of the church today. You don't just move away from that quickly and easily.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

And I agree to an extent with that.

I thought where NWUF was going with your comment about the man in cave analogy was that a missionary having grown up with correlated material is unqualified to be in that role of shedding light to the world.

From a faithful perspective, the change in perspective from no gospel to correlated gospel is dramatic and true in every sense of the word truth. The change from correlated gospel to uncorrelated gospel, ie the Noah example, is not so dramatic, IMHO.

      • A study was done in China where they found none of the poor people living in rural areas got cancer (not one!) because they were too poor to afford meat, so they didn't eat it. The meat eaters in the city had tons of cancer. Also, every single word in the Word of Wisdom is true exactly as it is written. WoW no longer a commandment!

We had several doozies (mostly from the same guy) slamming intellectuals, evolution, lack of prayer/religious learning in school. Probably the worst was a rant with made up statistics about the evil darwinists. It went something like this, "Stalin who killed 50 million, Mao who killed 60 million, Mussolini who killed 70 million and Hitler all because they believed in evolution".

I hope you countered with this:

Many are willing to quote Talmage when it fits their purpose, but I doubt they'd quote him when he starts distancing himself from some of our really crazy creationist teachings that seem to be carried forward from generation to generation.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

While it's an understandable misconception, atheists eat babies. They don't kill random (post-infant) people.

Um I can say with great assurance that Mussolini did not kill 70 million people. To do so would have required that he kill all of Italy more than twice over. He was a bad guy, but can't even claim to have killed half a million.

                    • Today we went to church for a baptism. Afterwards we hit Kroger and ran into a couple of different ward members who both looked as if they were embarrassed at being caught breaking the Sabbath. The moral of the story is, if you don't want your fellow ward members to know you shop on Sunday, don't go to the Kroger across the street from the chapel. I've never bumped into a ward member at the Kroger by my house on Sunday.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

In high school I worked at a grocery store and loved the horror on the faces of people in my ward when Id say hi to them on Sundays.

I ran into a lady in my ward two months ago at the grocery store. She marched right up to me and said "hello fellow sabbath breaker. I wont tell if you wont.". Cool lady.

Funny. I would shop worry-free on Sunday (although honestly I almost never shop at all regardless of the day of the week) because clearly I would only be observed by somebody else who was also shopping on Sunday.

It's the same idea I had as a kid during prayers -- nobody's gonna call me on having my eyes open during a prayer because they would also have to admit to having their eyes open.

Exactly. I had to do an ox-in-the-mire run to the local grocery store today to pick up a couple of things for dinner that I missed yesterday. I never worry about running into someone from the ward for that very reason. When I do I just nod and wink at them.

                              • Someday you rebels will simply shop on Sunday without any thought of anything other than that you need to buy something at the store, regardless of who sees you.
