  • I had a really great day today at Iglesia. Not sure if I learned anything new, but I definitely felt a lift.

The Bish called me to his office during the 'Hood and we started chatting. He had noticed that I never attend Sunday School and that I rarely go to EQ but do spend a lot of time out in the Foyer (grateful for the Foyer!). He indicated that he wanted to extend a calling to me and then...boom: Scouts. Specifically with the Deacons. I didn't w.a.s.t.e. a second...told him no and explained a bit.

I did indicate that I would love to help out but no scouts. He laughed and said that one of the best perks about being a Bishop is that you are guaranteed to NOT be the Scoutmaster.

Anyway, that isn't what made my day. In the course of our chat, his demeanor and expression reaffirmed to me the goodness of our Bishops and local leaders. These are folks that try really hard and sacrifice a ton to keep the trains moving. He admonished me to not make the Gospel overly complex, stating that it is our biggest weakness...making things much more difficult than need be. He referenced "all the cultural baggage" and "focus on the minutiae" when we should simply be striving to help others, be good parents, be good spouses, and live an honest life.

Not incredibly profound, but I really felt energized by his encouragement. I was really happy that he pulled me into his office for a chat. A really good guy.

Anyway, great program, kids said funny things (one referenced Jesus at one point, then after a slight pause added a "Christ" to clarify; made me laugh thinking of Jesus Martinez), kids sang loud and out of tune, and some heartfelt messages from the children. They made an effort to have the children write their own parts, and that was nice (even a shoutout for taking care of the environment through responsible trash disposal).

The bonus was that they sang both "Follow the Prophet" AND "Praise to the Man." Totally. Freaking. Awesome.

Soooooo... did you get out of being called into the Scouts?

Nice thoughts, 3D. I agree, they are for the most part very really good people.

Your calling story reminded me that mrs. myboynoah had been calling-less for a few weeks after being released from YW. She's been subbing for 12-year-old SS, so when a member of the Br Pres wanted to meet with her after church, she was sure it was as teacher for that class. Totally switched up on her; she was asked to be the VT coordinator. Why am I posting this? Because they didn't ask me first if it was okay.

Stinking liberals are taking over The Church.
            Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Of course. The Church is still true, the Bishop will just ask someone else, and the sun will rise tomorrow in the East, right in schedule.

              • During primary sharing time, in response to a question asking why he takes the sacrament, a Sunbeam responded:"I take the sacrament so I will grow tall like my older brother. "

In primary class a boy told the rest of us that his father is a great cook, and probably better than his mother. Without missing a beat my wife said, "Brother NWUF cooks some food that is passably acceptable.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, honey.

Thanks for sharing that. Agreed that most Church leaders are deep down very good people who are sacrificing to try to do the right thing -- it's easy to criticize Church policy and leaders from sort of a hypothetical/theoretical viewpoint, but I have had really awesome Bishops and EQ Presidents for the most part. I'm pretty open with them about my doubts and cynicism and they get it.

Is your Sunday School really that bad? I believe our lessons are usually a little tiny bit more interesting than sitting out in the foyer would be.

                      • So, in my lesson in EQ on the Millenium today, I decided to read Section 88 like the manual suggested. And, since I wanted to skim a little, I chose to read to the class.

                        Verse 87 states:

For not many days hence and the earth shall tremble and reel to and fro as a drunken man; and the sun shall hide his face, and shall refuse to give light; and the moon shall be bathed in blood; and the stars shall become exceedingly angry, and shall cast themselves down as a fig that falleth from off a fig tree.
When I got to the line about "The moon shall be bathed in blood," forgive me, I couldn't resist. It seemed so harmless, and then the Spirit left. I read, "The moon shall be bathed in blood. That's probably due to civil war breaking out in the lunar colonies."

No one laughed but me and the missionaries. I still think it's funny.
"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon

Then you said it went man, woman, man, woman, and finally the priest who broke the tie. According to my count that is 10 men, and 8 women. There was no need for the priest at the end.

Also, that would be 18 people bearing testimony (did it include the member of the bishopric that started it off?). Typically the announcements and sacrament take until approximately 25 after the hour. Assuming your numbers include the bishopric member, that would leave 40 minutes for 18 testimonies. At just over 2 minutes per testimony, you leave me no other choice but to call b.s. on your story.

I am sure there is a logical explanation. I'll wait for the response.
Yup, the men won it. Our Bishop, who is the Kindest Man Alive, closed the meeting with a remark about if they counted the testimonies that the women bore earlier today in Relief Society, he was sure they would have swamped the men.

Most of my "Hanging out in the Foyer" is usually spent chatting it up with the Bishop. ;-)
