I'm visiting a ward in Switzerland today and the EQP got up in priesthood and asked for volunteers to help a member move. It's amazing how similar the church is all over the world.

We had stake conference this weekend and our stake was split, which everyone knew about. On Saturday we had priesthood leadership meeting and we spent a good 20 minutes of that meeting discussing ways to let women feel more involved and more heard. I guess I just find it ironic (ruling?) to have 200 men in leadership positions sitting in a chapel trying to discuss ways to help women feel more involved.
Overall the weekend was great. I skipped the adult session and took the kids to the park to play. MJ went to the session and apparently nothing noteworthy came from it.

It wasn't the one in Luzern, was it? I attended EQ there last year.

That was harsh, bro.Originally posted by old_gregg View Postwhy do you losers go to church while on vacation? that is stupid
Attended church (on a Saturday!) in Katmandu last month. Met some fascinating people and met a couple of service missionaries (retired couple) from UT who invited us over for dinner. Spent 3-4 hours there (they seemed starved for company - esp. someone from home) and had a great visit. They had some incredible stories to tell."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Some of my best church experiences ever have been attending small out of they branches while on vacation. Sacrament meeting out doors at Yellowstone. Or in a mortuary on the south island of New Zealand. Or being invited to a post sacrament boating trip from a small branch in Australia. Etc. We dont go all the time on vacation, but the more unlikely the locale, the better the experience tends to be.PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

Ditto. I'm more than happy to take a bye from church, but I enjoy attending sacrament meeting in strange locales for various reasons. We did so a couple of weeks ago on the Isle of Man where, shockingly, they don't get lots of tourists. The locals and the U.S. missionaries are often thrilled to have visitors so we're treated like rock stars and it's fun to chat it up before and after the meeting. And the meeting itself is usually very interesting, if only to note the many differences and similarities with the stateside experience. I'll usually bail on the rest of the block, though...Originally posted by creekster View PostToo many gummis for you.

Exactly. At one little branch we attended they were so excited to see us that they cancelled the rest of the block and ordered a take out spread from a restaurant that one of the members owns and had an impromptu feed for the branch in our honor. We should adopt that custom whenever there are visitors in our meetings.Originally posted by creekster View PostExactly. While in Nepal we met a young man at church who had been dropped off on the streets of Kathmandu when he was ten years old. He foraged as best he could and a few years later he met someone from the LDS church and got some stability in his life. He served a mission in India and is now working on completing his HS diploma at some kind of tech high school (with the help of the service missionaries). Extremely sharp, good-looking kid. You would never believe he came from the street. He hopes to attend BYU someday. He is doing so well that his mother keeps having babies and going into Kathmandu and abandoning them in his care.
Also attended church in Venice and Florence last year. They get so many visitors that they do translations every week for sac meeting. Had a great experience."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
