    • Stake high councilman in SM stands up and has a special message to the stake. Starts the familiar lecture about how stake conference is so important, blah blah blah. Then goes off on a diatribe on how they are hearing that people in the stake are treating this as a day off to spend with family (full disclosure: this is exactly what I do). This is about the fourth time I've heard this in the last month.

Then he says, I've heard people say that this church is supposed to be family first. It is not. That is not the doctrine of the church. The doctrine is that families are forever.

I'm not sure what he said after that because, for the first time in my life, I was leaving the meeting precisely because of what somebody said. I did not give him the bird and scream "fuck you" in the chapel on my way out, but I considered it.

I am seriously thinking about send an email to the SP at this point (1) telling him I will never be at another stake meeting so long as he is the SP and, (2) telling him if he doesn't recant that nonsense he will have my resignation letter in the morning. This happened 15 minutes ago - I'm back in the chapel - so it's probably the anger of the moment, but I have never been this mad before in my life. I have no place in my life for this kind of bullshit.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

      • High councilmen are the largest source of false doctrine in the church, I'd venture.
"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon

I would be pissed myself, but I don't think some guy who makes High Councilman should affect you for more than a minute. It is just more evidence that one needs to listen and then decide for themselves. I would never believe something because a High Councilmen said it. I might end up pondering it and then agree, but it would be my decision.

Agreed. I'm cooled down a bit now. However, the message comes from the stake, as prior experience indicates, and that concerns me. I think the family bit was ad libbed but the message of stake conference (which, again, I won't be attending) is from higher than the HC.

True, but I have moved to the level of not even thinking I have to believe everything said in General Conferene. Stake Conference comments I disagree with are really easy for me to blow off. People know better than to be in a discussion with me and try to prove their point by pointing to something said in Stake Conference.

Yep. Stake leaders are every bit as likely to say goofball things as ward leaders.

                • Today I learned in church from my neighbor that some assface knocked a bunch of slats of my vinyl fence out, and that they did it to several people's houses around the neighborhood.

I'm pissed and wondering how much this is going to cost. They made sure to break all the slats as well.

                      • The Krakatoa eruptions of 1883 actually took place in the years leading up to the first vision. Indeed, the harvesting difficulties experienced on the Smith farm were due to the weather effects of this cataclysmic event, resulting in July snowfalls in upstate New York. From the mouth of the bishop.

Did you ever see the Watchmen? Maybe the explosion was so dramatic that its effects sent particles into the past.

The Day the World Exploded: Krakatoa by Simon Winchester is a very good read.

Was that the one with the naked blue dude flying around with his CGI dong swinging about? I skipped that one.

It was a report from some conference from last week.
