  • Is singing patriotic hymns over Memorial Day Weekend now a thing, or has it always been a thing that I've somehow missed. And how long until we add president's day weekend to the rotation?

    (Not complaining - just asking)
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

      Pretty sure that's a ward-by-ward thing.

      • Heard a new talk opener that really had me going for a second.

Dude gets up to rock the mic and in serious tone says, "brothers and sisters, I have a confession to make. It is a very serious confession and one that will probably make many people uncomfortable to hear, but I have to get this off my chest..."

He had my attention. I was betting on law of chastity violation but would have been satisfied with loss of faith or even long-standing hatred of a prominent fellow ward member.

"I want to confess to all of you the hand of the Lord in my life."

What a tease. People shouldn't play around like that while speaking at the pulpit. Uncool.

        • Unlike many of my stories, there's no exaggeration in this telling.

HPG and EQ met together today. A new guy in the ward was teaching the lesson. He is a former bishop. The lesson was loosely based on Pres. Monson's October 2011 talk "Stand Ye in Holy Places."

At one point, after talking about how he wants the youth to pass the Sacrament "transparently," he said, looking at me, "Now, this is just my opinion, but when I was bishop, if someone had a beard in a presidency, they were out (he actually made the baseball umpire "out" motion). I've always looked to the Brethren for how to dress (he was wearing pants about 3 sizes too small with his shirt tucked into his pants, showing the express form of the underside of his belly curl, btw)."

I responded, "I've always looked to the Savior for my example. Beard. Long Hair. No White Shirt and Tie."

          He didn't respond. Tool.

Who said Jesus doesn't wear a white shirt and a tie?

I like to think it is more of a bolo tie, however.

            • I learned that when the person giving the open or closing prayer cries throughout the prayer I first become uncomfortable. I also learned than being uncomfortable during a prayer makes me chuckle after about 2 minutes.

              • I learned that teenagers can give the opening/closing prayer in sacrament and can publicly thank the Lord that school was ending soon.

Every affinity group has its bad apples. But I'm coming to the conclusion that a larger portion of the barrel is bad to start with among Mormons.

Maybe its because they think "following the brethren" is an excuse for dickish behavior?

Wow. Well I hope your quorum brethren ostracized you sufficiently after hearing that, since that was obviously what he was going for.

                    What an ass.

                      • GD teacher asked for examples of having been persecuted for being Mormon. The examples:
                        1) having to walk through picketers to get into the LA temple.
                        2) having a teacher teach that Brigham Young was polygamist
                        3) when living outside of Utah, people assuming that their 7-child family was either Catholic or Mormon.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Sounds like an emotional tarring and feathering.

Yes, but like all adversity, it made them stronger!

Does #2 think that Brigham young wasn't a polygamist? Did they expound on what made this event so traumatic?

A dumb move for a GD teacher, IMO.
