"The self-assigned gatekeeper is Jesus Christ, who awaits us out of a deep divine desire to welcome us as much as to certify us; hence, ‘He employeth no servant there.’ (2 Nephi 9:41) If we acknowledge Him now, He will lovingly acknowledge and gladly admit us then!” -Neil A. Maxwell.

In my view, the Lord instructs. The Lord welcomes. The Lord actively brings us into His presence and the presence of the Father after we have done all that He's asked us to do. The veil, the last barrier standing between us and the Lord, is removed for the final time and we leave it behind as we enter the literal presence of Christ and the Father, to go no more out.

It makes no sense to me to use the veil as a symbol of the Lord. Maybe that's a me issue that will take some time to work out. And I don't know why, exactly, it sticks in my craw and doesn't feel correct at this time. It just doesn't. It struck me as odd the first time I heard it in a session, and didn't feel any more true when it was soft-launched in general conference and then rolled out in the recommend interview. (If I was cynical, I'd suggest there will be a number of talks in October session proclaiming that this was true all along).
I’m with you. But I’ve frequently been guilty of over-thinking and analyzing symbols, metaphors, analogies, etc. But at least people keep telling me I’d be fun at parties, though I’m rarely invited.

    • The temple is pretty explicit in its training. Garments are introduced, in a very Old Testament style and iconography.

You walk through the wilderness with infrequent, yet poignant, interactions with those behind the veil. Learning piece by piece, the path of the Lord. After all the trail and tribulations of being thrown from the presence of God, we are finally ready to truly pray to guide and meet presence at the veil, to only be reminded again that all the things we learned from the apostles and leaders we meet along the way were only pieces and not enough to earn fellowship with our maker.

After we’ve tried all the things that we can and have exhausted our options, the Lord invites us into full fellowship and we rent the veil, stripping off the Old Testament style of garment and enter into oneness with God.

Garments, as taught today in the church, are an impediment, a half measure, to full enlightenment.

        • Don't look now but according to CB there are more garment options on the way including sleeveless versions. While I haven't checked you can allegedly find them if you choose Uganda as the country on the church store website. Someone else in the thread confirmed the new options.

that is really interesting. I hope it’s true. Would help a lot of younger folks be more diligent about wearing them.

There was actually a time back in the 20s where they came out with sleeveless garments, and then nixed the idea right before they started selling them.

Yeah, I would be diligent "worrying" about them... I would be worried that sleeveless garments would attract more men into the church, like Douglas Emhoff, that are not nice to their girlfriends and wives.

But I welcome the idea of having more garment choices, especially in Texas during the summer months.

              • Wait, will there be garments for men without sleeves? I thought it was only women's garments.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. Men's too, apparently.

                  • Whoa. This style would have let Mrs. NWC wear about 50% of her current tops that low-key got me sprung.

who knows, if this update happened a decade ago I might have lingered longer!

I've wondered how long the church can keep these kids in garments and from drinking coffee, I think they have an uphill battle ahead of them.

They lost the battle on tattoos, and that is no longer in the FSoY pamphlet. So society does drive some of the "concerns" that people have.

I still have people give me grief on a weekly basis about having tattoos. They always bring up old conference talks and counsel. I tell them to quit looking in the rear view mirror and start looking forward.

                            https://www.thechurchnews.com/leader...s-humid-areas/

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is testing redesigned options for sacred temple garments worn by members residing in hot, humid areas.

“Devout Latter-day Saints cherish the privilege of wearing the temple garment. Some of those members live in hot and humid areas,” said Church spokesman Doug Andersen in a statement released Thursday, Oct. 17.

“The First Presidency has authorized changes in the garment to bless those members and others who might benefit from the changes. Beyond this, the Church does not comment on temple matters considered to be sacred.”

Note the word "testing". I am going to go way out on a limb and predict that these will be popular and widely available soon.
