Temple names

Not sure if this is an OK topic to discuss. I'll try to be reasonable. I've always thought it strange than a man can know his wife's name, but not vice versa. I made a point of telling my name to both wives (ex-wife and new wife). Ex-wife was absolutely furious.

The other tricky thing is that sometimes I confuse my wives' names. Imagine what this is like for a polygamist!

Cardiac and my dad scared me half to death the first time I went to the temple because somehow they discovered my name. We were sitting in the endowment room, and Cardiac was saying: "I know SoonerCoug's new name." Then my dad said: "I figured it out too." I was already freaked out enough without that crap. Only later did I realize that everyone gets the same name on a given day. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of keeping it a secret?

I am not sure what you are asking in this thread, but I am confused by the absence of any sort of heavy-handed behavior on the part of your bishop or stake president.

I have always wondered about these things as well. I don't think it is a big deal either way, but I would love to know the reasoning behind it.

As for everyone getting the same name, I used to be an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple, and I remember one time the temple president's wife came in the locker room in a panic and said that we needed to give a girl a different name than the new name for the day, as she just received her endowment that morning and was coming back for a second session, and they didn't want her to get the same name. So they have a default second name and they had us use it. I always thought that was kind of funny and deceptive, but the right intentions were probably there.

If you want to find out someone's name, first find out their endowment date and then do a session on its anniversary. Every temple follows the same calendar of names every year.

Does the same name get used more than once a year? I can't imagine that they have 365 different names for the women, since it's usually a scriptural name.

I don't honestly know what the significance of the new name is. Maybe someone will come along and enlighten me. I have always wondered whether that was just a left over from the Masonic rites (like some other things since removed) or whether it has more significance. I can certainly think of some possible meanings, but I'm not sure any of them are intended.

I went through with my SIL the first time. She and my bro had been married for many years by the time they went. She was pissed when she got her name. It was the same name as one of my brother's exes.

Yes many names are repeated. Some only appear once in the scriptures, in one of those long lists of who begat who. Guess they were more important than what we currently have record of.

I think the answer is quite simple but IMO requires viewing husband/wife Adam/Eve not as male/female but as spirit/flesh. The endowment is the story of spiritual recreation that teaches us to forsake the physical(Eve or represented by the breasted participants) and to be reborn as spiritual Gods. So a question to your question, why does the spiritual 'new person' need to know the name of the carnal physical person? The names themselves are unimportant, the symbolism behind this practice is the purpose of the pageantry.y
