What is more damaging?

I'm confused. I don't think anyone here has said that masturbating = having a sex addiction. People have said that porn can be dangerous. It can. Drinking alcohol doesn't mean that someone is addicted to alcohol, but alcohol can still be dangerous/addictive. The point is that porn can be dangerous because it can be addictive. Well, I think that's the point. There are so many issues running through this thread that I frankly have no idea what anyone is talking about. Thus the five stars. CUF....Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostRB, I think that it is also worth noting that 'porn addiction' means something quite different in that article than it does in the minds of most Mormon housewives that catch their husbands self-servicing. Addiction, in that article, is defined as when a person pursues the addictive behavior to the exclusion of meeting their other basic needs. Well fine, but a person could look at a TON OF PORN, and self-serve every day of the week, but still take care of his basic needs, and thus not meet the definition of 'addiction' used in that article. On the other hand, 9 out of 10 Mormon housewives would consider their husbands to be very addicted if they were doing that. It is only worth noting because when different people on the board talk about 'addiction' they may both very well being talking about drastically different things.
So are you going to answer my other question already or are you just as confused as I am?

I just read the last 20 posts or so and the thread seemed to have degenerated into a neverending discussion over whether porn is the elixir of the gods (RF) or is a real problem (RB). Shockingly, I side with RB.Originally posted by byu71 View PostYou mean HAD 5 STARS. Then Rose and Robin hi-jacked my highly rated thread.

Jean? I haven't seen her. Does she have as nice a smile as my girlfriend?Originally posted by Rosebud View PostAw shucks..... I'm glad you're happy with your polygamist ladies, then. I totally won, BTW, because at least I get to look at Jean now.
By the way, you don't need to feel responsible for the gals, they are there to remind me what happens to religious extremists and how different their world looks.
Although I respect your views, the smiling girl dissapeared having nothing to do with your concerns about her.

Actually, I take these opportunities to unconfuse those who still think that you are the culprit and cause of them not being able to gaze upon her pretty smile anymore.Originally posted by Rosebud View PostI didn't mean to suggest that it did. I'm getting kind of tired of being confused.

Then we don't really disagree.Originally posted by Rosebud View PostI'm confused. I don't think anyone here has said that masturbating = having a sex addiction. - We both agree that porn can be addictive.
- We both agree that cultural factors significantly affect the addictive potential of activities.
- We both agree that genetic and biological factors significantly affect individuals' risk of addiction.
- We both agree that Mormons and scientists probably use the word 'porn addiction' to mean different things.
- I think we both agree that masturbation is a normal, safe and useful form of sexual release.
- In spite of masturbation being normal, safe and useful, we probably both agree that it too can be addictive.
It looks like we are disagreeing in the margins. You think porn is addictive enough to disparage it in general. I think the addictive risk of porn can be made trivial by encouraging healthier attitudes about sex and human sexuality.
RB, if you can agree that a person could use porn every day, as a tool to help self-service, and that he could still live a normal life so that his heavy use of pornography could not be considered an 'addiction,' then we are practically on the same page.
Finally, I've put some thought into answering your other question. I even started writing a response, but it started to get very long and personal, so I saved the response as a draft and decided not to post it. Maybe some time.

P.S. -- RoseBud, since I have never known you to back away from any debate, ever, I can only assume that we ended this one with your completely agreeing with me. That is very big of you, but I would expect nothing less from one of my favorite CUF-ateers.

P.P.S: RB, please cut out those stupid Wiki links! They put my browser into an epileptic fit, requesting a password and user name.

I know. What was up with that Maslow link? Is that a new wiki thing or something?Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostP.P.S: RB, please cut out those stupid Wiki links! They put my browser into an epileptic fit, requesting a password and user name.
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you on this. I've been distracted and distant from the board for a few days. When I get a few I'll pick this conversation back up. I'm also still interested in your other answer
