  • Is there a finer LDS hymn than "Redeemer of Israel?"

I am listening to the Mack Wilberg arrangement right now and I don't think so. Others may be as good, but none is better.

    IMHO, of course.

You can learn about the history of that and other hymns here. Good stuff, and quite interesting. W.W. Phelps alone (author of "Redeemer of Israel") has quite a story.
“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”
    ― W.H. Auden

"God made the angels to show His splendour - as He made animals for innocence and plants for their simplicity. But men and women He made to serve Him wittily, in the tangle of their minds."
-- Robert Bolt, A Man for All Seasons

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
    --Antoine de Saint-Exupery

I love that hymn. I got to perform that arrangement in Men's Chorus at BYU with Mack conducting -- it was awesome.

      Excellent choice, LA.
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I always liked "God Be With You 'Til We Meet Again" because it meant church was over.

I like How Firm a Foundation -- I think it fits that description as well.

Once the speakers in our ward left a lot of time at the end of the meeting (15minutes) so we decided just for fun to ask the congregation to sing all the verses - I think there are 7. Everyone loved it and we still got out 10 minutes early.

There are some hymns that just need all the verses covered, especially A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief.

Hmmm... maybe I should have asked you to help out with the performance piece.

My branch president in New Orleans had a strict policy: every verse to every hymn every time. If we were running short on time, he'd switch hymns to "As I Have Loved You."

His reasoning was, "The hymns are like stories, and if you don't sing all the verses, you're not finishing the story."

                    I love him.

did he have the same policy re: reading one verse and not stopping until you finished the entire volume of scripture? because..you know...those stories are like....stories.

Redeemer of Israel is a great one.

Our previous ward music director (whatever you call it) decided that it would be fun to explore the less well-known hymns. Every week it was something entirely new. We quickly discovered that most of those hymns never caught on for a reason. I appreciate a good traditional hymn now.

That's another excellent one. I love our old standards. We don't sing them enough.

Yeah, ours does that on occasion. I've yet to notice a hidden gem.

our current does this. wish she wouldn't. as you say, there is a reason these tunes are not popular.

Although a nod to one of my faves that is not common in sac meeting: Come all ye sons of god that have received the priesthood.

The ultimate rad song that seemed to peak in the 80s and has since disappeared from our weekly lexicon: In Our Lovely Deseret. Where has that tune, gone? Joltin' Joe has left and gone away!

We need more songs that contain the word "meat."
