        I'm not sure you can buy a delicious sandwich for less than $7. If you pay less than that, you're sacrificing fresh bread, good cheese or meat.

        In addition to the Reuben, my favorite is a turkey bacon avocado on sourdough, with pesto mayo. Of course, the sandwich is only good if all ingredients are fresh, but when they are, heaven.

            I've always thought that a sandwich tastes best if someone else makes it for you.

              I get that one at Birley by the Ferry Building in SF. The bacon is excellent, pretty crispy (as I like it), and the avocados are scooped right out of the pit as I watch.

              My fiancee makes her own pesto mayo, I'll have to ask her. She also makes EXCELLENT asian street sandwiches that I'll have to post the recipe for. Some mayo/sriracha/other stuff sauce that is excellent

                              I didn't comment on this originally, since I have only had one Monte Cristo, and is was pretty gross. Today, however, I had the exciting opportunity of having lunch with our own good Doctor Wuap. As we sat down and looked at the menu, we saw the Monte Cristo and thought of this thread (well, Wuap actually thought of it, while I then vaguely recalled it). We decided it would be an appropriate choice, and both ordered one.

                              I am happy to report that is was FAR better than my previous experience. HFN will be happy to know that it was sprinkled with powdered sugar and came with strawberry jam, which we both applied. The version we had had been dipped in crushed corn flakes along with the egg, and then deep fried. I don't know if this is traditional, but it made the crust nice and crispy, which was a nice contrast to the warm and gooey interior. One of the problems I had with my earlier version was that the bread appeared to be soggy french toast left over from breakfast a few hours earlier, and the interior meats and cheeses were still cold.

                              I will look for a Monte Cristo again when I want to eat my full days worth of calories in one meal!
