    One of my favorite things to eat is a nice, big homemade sandwich. Sometimes I just like the deli special with a bit of everything from the produce drawer thrown in and other times I like to make a specialty sandwich.

    The Reuben is a great one to make at home. I get thick sliced corned beef from the deli and a high-quality Rye bread. I fry up the beef in a skillet and chip it up; remove, then put saurkraut in the hot skillet to remove some of the moisture. Once that's done I build the sandwich with the beef, kraut, swiss, TO (I like it better than Russian) then grill it up. Delicious and usually better than you'll get at the local sandwich shop.

    Another thing I like to do is get a high-quality artisan bread, like a sliced country boule or sourdough. I use some mix of Italian meats, provolone, and a roasted red pepper spread from TJ's. Pop it in the panini grill and it's good to go.

    Any other sandwich ideas out there? What's your favorite one to make?

    Holy Moses do I ever love Reuben sandwiches. My very favorite thing about going on a cruise was the chance to order a Reuben sandwich, delivered to my room at any time of the day or night, pretty much whenever I pleased. Your description of home made Reuben's has me feeling extra resentful of my wife's bloody vegetarianism.

      Just put some type of fake tofu meat into her sandwich.

        A Reuben is not my favorite sandwich (although your preparation method was interesting) and I don't care at all for sourdough bread.

        I'm just going to need to build on the Italian meats, provolone, and roasted red pepper spread and take it from there.

          I like to make a variation of a BLT with Swiss cheese. While I'm cooking the bacon, I'll toast the slices of whole wheat bread. (I do this because I like the toasted bread after it cools down.) I build the sandwich in this order: thin slices of Swiss cheese, bacon (right from the pan so it helps melt the cheese), tomato slices and iceberg lettuce. I don't use any kind of condiments, but I suppose a bit of mayo could be good.

          Your Reuben sounds awesome, but I don't like Russian or TO dressing. I prefer mustard, so I'll substitute that when I give your sandwich a try.

              I'm sorry to hear that you've had such negative experiences with the wonderful AMERICAN creation known as the Reuben and the bread that sustained AMERICAN prospectors as they helped build the West. Perhaps it's time you come home and adjust your palette accordingly.

                My favorite sandwich is the Monte Cristo, sadly there aren't many places that have it on the menu. It is one that I love making at home, and will stray from the traditional ham, turkey and swiss on occasion. However nothing beats the classic with a little powder sugar and a hint of strawberry jam!

                  Put me down as a HUGE Reuben fan. I actually have a hobby of getting Reuben's at the most obscure places as I travel the State of Oregon. Most are just OK, but among my favorite places are Roses, and Goose Hollow Inn in northwest Portland. Love the Monte Cristo as well, but they are harder to find.

                        It's interesting that I remember where and when I ate my first Monte Cristo and my first Reuben, and I love both sandwiches.

                        My introduction to the Monte Cristo occurred in the '60s at the Blue Bayou restaurant which was inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. A magical sandwich in a magical setting. Looking back, the sandwich quality was probably only so so, but it was ambrosia at the time.

                        And my first Reuben was enjoyed, also in the '60s, at a peninsula country club where my dad's business partner had taken me as a guest. Again, superb setting and sandwich. Magical.

                          One of the more fancy sandwiches I make is a grilled vegetable sandwich. Roast some red peppers, grill some eggplant, onion slices, tomato slices and ciabatta rolls brushed with oil. Build the sandwich with the veggies, goat cheese, splash of red wine vinegar and julienned basil. Good stuff, but at bit of work.

                              I can testify that the Monte Cristo at Diz is still pretty good. Diz actually serves a few decent things and almost all of them can be found at the Blue Bayou. The reason is simple: Blue Bayou shares the kitchen with Club 33 and the food at Club 33 is on par with your average nice hotel....nice buffets, good meat. Club 33 isn't going to receive a Michelin star, but it is a good place to eat, esp since it is about the only place I know of that caliber that also allows you to dress like a tourist and let your kids run around. I once had chateaubriand and grand marnier souffle at 33...it was nice. They even do a nice traditional baked Alaska as well as the more exotic bombe Alaska, complete with flames and rum. Delish.

                              Anyhow, the Monte Cristo is fantastic, although a calorie bomb. There are few places in OC that do a nice Monte Cristo without having to go through the wait at The Blue Bayou. check it out.
