The first time I went to NYC for business about ten years or so ago, there was a piece on best travel restaurants in the Delta magazine with Carnegie Deli sandwich picture on the cover. Something like this.



I took taxi to my midtown hotel, put my bags away, and walked straight to Carnegie Deli and ordered that sandwich. One of my favorite meals ever. The pastrami was so good and so much. Wow. Oh and the pickles. Home made style pickles some crunchy and light some soggy and super pickled.

There is a Carnegie inside The Mirage in Las Vegas and it is ldc's favorite place. We eat there every time we go, and if I go alone and don't bring home a corned beef sandwich I am in trouble. Depending on how much money I lost I sometimes also bring home a pastrami, you know to show how much I love her.

I went to many a Harris Teeter as a child in NC. And Bi-Lo.

Boar's Head is great wherever you buy it, though.

I should've mentioned that this was the first time I'd seen Boar's Head in NC.

I didn't comment on this originally, since I have only had one Monte Cristo, and is was pretty gross. Today, however, I had the exciting opportunity of having lunch with our own good Doctor Wuap. As we sat down and looked at the menu, we saw the Monte Cristo and thought of this thread (well, Wuap actually thought of it, while I then vaguely recalled it). We decided it would be an appropriate choice, and both ordered one.

I am happy to report that is was FAR better than my previous experience. HFN will be happy to know that it was sprinkled with powdered sugar and came with strawberry jam, which we both applied. The version we had had been dipped in crushed corn flakes along with the egg, and then deep fried. I don't know if this is traditional, but it made the crust nice and crispy, which was a nice contrast to the warm and gooey interior. One of the problems I had with my earlier version was that the bread appeared to be soggy french toast left over from breakfast a few hours earlier, and the interior meats and cheeses were still cold.

I will look for a Monte Cristo again when I want to eat my full days worth of calories in one meal!

I got to thinking on the drive home, that with my sinus infection, I couldn't really make out any subtle flavors. I started thinking about the jam, and there were a lot of seeds in it. Like I said, all I could taste was salt, sweet, and grease, and it was delicious. But, the jam flavor, other than sweet, eluded me. Could it have been raspberry jam? What do you think, Clark?

I should've mentioned that this was the first time I'd seen Boar's Head in NC.

When I worked at Kroger in high school our deli had this row of seats next to it called "Barney's New York Café." You walk right up to the deli counter and order a sandwich made with Boar's Head meat, cut fresh in front of you, from fresh-baked bread, with Boar's Head mustard and horseradish. A plate with pickle, sandwich, and 12 oz refillable drink was $1.99, any sandwich. All of the baggers ate lunch there on our break. Most people didn't know you could do it; I think Publix might do this still too, but I know that Wal-Mart won't. It'd be interesting to see which deli's will do it.

Has anyone ever had a fluffernutter sandwich? I've always know about them, but have never had one. It's where you put peanut butter and marshmallow creme on white bread. I think I'm going to make a couple for dessert tonight.

4 slices of white bread (wonder bread is best but given these times do your best)

4 tablespoons of Duke's mayonnaise. (Yes, it has to be Duke's.)

2 medium perfectly ripe bananas.

Salt to taste.

4 tablespoons of Duke's mayonnaise. (Yes, it has to be Duke's.)

2 medium perfectly ripe bananas.

Salt to taste.

My kids eat fluffernutter sandwiches all the time. I can't bring myself to do it.

When I was a kid my mom would make me a peanutbutter/marshmellow/banana sandwich. I thought it was normal, and that everyone ate them.

Ha. I don't think I have opened this thread since I posted two years ago, but as I was reading my post, I thought to myself, "that wasn't strawberry jam, you moron, it was raspberry", so yes, I believe you are correct.

Oh, and sorry to sidetrack. I'll get things back here.

YOhio, my sisters used to love fluffernutters, but I always thought the fluff looked gross, so I don't ever remember trying one.

Yes. Make them often. Don't use white bread though, never buy that crap.

This is the go to sandwich of choice before every game. Ask any major league ball player and they will all mention the PBandH.
