  • Christmas (Eve) dinner

Do you do something big for Eve or Christmas or both?

We normally do something Christmas Eve and have leftovers Christmas Day. My family does not have a Christmas Eve tradition and his family's is clam chowder (which he hates) so a few years ago we started our own. I make Arabic food. I figure if Jesus were born today in Bethlehem, he wouldn't be eating ham and scalloped potatoes. Our menu:

    Egg nog
    Homemade pita
    hummus
    baba ghanouj
    Tabouleh
    rice pilaf
Beef shawarma (I already have it marinating)
    Falafel
    tahini sauce
Crème brulee (We needed some French influence)

Also, danimal has a traditional Christmas morning breakfast which consists of fried spam, hollandaise sauce, poached eggs and English muffins. This is from his family and goes way back. Not my favorite, but as long as he makes it, I support it.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

glad to see I made the guest list. Who's this Tabouleh guy?
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

We do Christmas Eve dinner also. Our menu is rather tradional though. Ham, Christmas potatos, "special" christmas punch, vegis, home made rolls. Desert is always lemon bars for some reason.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Excellent. I'll bring the Ka'ket Kanafeh. Save me a spot next to that dark-eyed mystery woman.

Every year, my grandmother (who I refer to as Baba) made Ukranian food on Christmas Eve, and the whole extended family would get together. I would always bring a hamburger and eat it in the car, since I don't like Ukranian food but didn't want to offend my Baba, who I love dearly.

(Cardiac at least knows Baba - I think Sooner may as well).

In intervening years, the feast has moved to my Uncle's home and now includes various authentic Italian bits as well (he is a marvelous cook and has spent much time in Italy, speaks Italian, etc.). I haven't been in something like 8 years, but every time Christmas Eve rolls around, I longingly remember the days of mingling with my family, full from my stealth Whopper in the car.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

We do a French feast. I usually make French Onion soup from scratch. The main course is centered around a prime rib roast or rack of lamb, fruits and cheeses are mandatory. I will have raw oysters; no one else in my family will eat them. We finish with the Bouche de Noel (Yule Log), a French cake pastry. Then I have to go for a long run on Christmas to work it all off.

That's fun, but just watch those cheddar bay biscuits. They'll really kill your fitday numbers!

Danimal's family does this too, but I don't like it that much. I prefer crème brulee.

Sounds delicious. I served my mission in France and love to incorporate French food into my family traditions. My children now always request pain au chocolat as one of their breakfast choices on Christmas morning, and we love to have the fruit and cheeses.

We do Chinese takeout for Christmas Eve.

It is something my family always did and my wife loved the idea.

We had Chinese one year when the neighbor's dogs stormed into our house and devoured our turkey. Those damn Bumpuses!
